Actually, yes! I refer those jobs to another shop that has been doing them since day one.

What about an EF12? I REALLY (seriously) want a quality rebuilt unit, but I am worried about it being taken seriously. I drive this little car for all it's worth and I know my little motor isn't going to last too much longer. While I would love to rebuild it myself for the fun and knowledge, I feel my money would be better spent with a professional doing the work. It could use a refresh, oil pump, water pump (rebuild is the only option) and if possible, clean it up a little so it's better suited to operate for extended periods at 4-5k rpm (talking 30min to an hour each). I could ship it to you in a tote or bring it up in the trunk of the Camaro.

Oooo...that'll be a tough one simply because of parts (un)availability.

Agreed. I am on a first-name basis with my Suby parts supplier based on my strange affinity for these cars. If it would be possible to generate a list of needed items, I can see if I can assemble it. If it proves impossible to track down everything required, then well I guess I am SOL.

Gathering everything ahead of time (or as much as possible) is also a good thing as none of the parts are ever in stock, so it can take a good two weeks+ to get a gasket or a bracket from Japan or Alaska (where parts usually come from when I order). I just placed an order for 25 items for two of these cars and one of the items was in stock.. Heh.. It's a FIAT in a Subaru suit.

I can actually get most parts fairly quickly for this engine.
There may be one or two items that are a few days out, but everything looks available.

Wow that is very cool.. Not something I am used to hearing with these cars!

As far as I know, the only real weak point of the engine is the oil pump. I believe it is a fairly nicely done engine other than that. Do you think a rebuild with a couple improvements would be too crazy of an idea for an engine like this? As far as power it's pretty nice as-is but I would like to see if there is any way to make it more suited for today's road speeds.

On the 4WD cars, 75mph in 5th is 4500rpm...

Couple of pictures of how we port cylinder heads.

These pictures shows Step #1, where the valve seat diameter is enlarged to blend it with the runner diameter.
The next step is to slightly enlarge and smooth out the transition from runner to valve seat.
Runner opening diameter is matched to the gasket.

very pretty. I was thinking as I was reading through this very entertaining and informative thread that if another shop hijacked my engine build thread I would put sugar in thier gas tank.

Awesome! I had thought something along the lines of a single turbo used on a Z32TT would be a place to start since that is basically boosting a 1.5L inline 3. It's so perfect for boost tho - iron block, forged crank, port EFI w/ out a MAF.. Anyway that's a long way off and a nice "spruced" rebuild would make much more sense and make my axles last longer.. Got to finish my Impreza coupe swap and get it on the road - then the Justy is next.
