That was all I was asking- I'm sure that if he's OK with it you're fine, but I could see this leading to a lot of confusion, both are called Griffin, and seriously who doesn't shorten the name of a shop when they talk about this kind of stuff, how would anyone that does not know both businesses know any distinction? and besides, apart from dyno tuning- what do you do that his shop doesn't?
If you guys "agreed" on these points without consulting him, you shouldn't be surprised to see a letter from a lawyer.

Don't you think you should got a little proactive and actually *check* with Terry before launching your business under what is for all intents and purposes a copycat name, have people designing logos, etc?
Just seems like it might be prudent.....

RE -- The Griffin thing...
Don't worry about it too terribly much please....
I'm going to go by Griffin Motorwerke and have a chat with Terry to see how he feels. When searching the name Griffin, we actually did come across their website but from the site they looked to do mainly just 'normal' service and appeared to be extremely local. I didn't know they were so well-known in the area or, especially, nationally.
We chose the name Griffin not because it's somebody's last name (like Terry Griffin did), but because we were mulling over "mythological creatures" basically searching for one with the right characteristics, ability to become a cool logo
(think vinyl on the side of a nicely-prepped car), etc. We wanted something that everyone could refer to, in abbreviated form, as a single word name... no initials!!!
Anyhoo -- it's not set in stone yet. We'd like to use it, because we like it, but changing the name wont change the shop, of course! If somebody has a super genious suggestion, it's not really too late.
Most importantly, this wont be an issue for lawyers. If Griffin Motorwerke is really against it, we'll go back to the 'name the shop' drawing board. Like Ed said, it wasn't our intention to step on anybodys' toes so it's really a non-issue if that ends up being the case.
Hope we don't get too terribly sidetracked on this though
. We'll get the name issue figured out. In the mean time we're getting really excited to open a TRULY high quality shop with the best possible customer service. ...and I know Ed is really excited to play with the new dyno

I know what I would say
"I have been in the area for 20+ years with this name, kick rocks"
do yourself a favor, pick another name and don't waste his time

.It's funny guys, but it's really not the case, like Ed already said. If there's truly such a strong association with this shop, we'll come up with a new name. None of us had ever heard of it, nor had the handful of people we ran it by. OBVIOUSLY G. Motorwerke has used it for a long time so if it's an issue it's an issue and we're on to plan B for the name. Let's move on in this thread though, okay? The name is like the least important aspect of this whole thing
Realize that we DON'T want people to think of somebody else when they hear the name of our shop. We don't want something generic like "Speed Tuning" or whatever else though either... so we'll see.
