You have nothing to lose. Get WAY up that tow company's ****! Look, tow companys are the 'bad guys' anyway. I'm sure they'll do what's necessary do avoid a messy resolve.
IMO, a letter to the state's Attorney General (if the tow co fails to respond to your requests for satisfaction), will get their attention. Plus...it a great big billlyclub for free. Most states have a consumer protection division. If this does not help, then get your attorney.
Save all receipts and documentation. Good luck.

hey just a thought-
My friend got his audi a4 quattro towed the other day. It was pulled by the front wheels but the guy put on these little mini wheels around the back wheels. That way, the car was all the way off the ground. Maybe the people who saw your car getting towed didnt see that. I don't know, but I would sure hope that's what it was. How could they miss the AWD on the back??

Hey dude, sorry to hear about your car. I would definitely speak with a lawyer because a lot of time, these stupid signs are just there to scare u and not sue. At a restaurant when a sign says, "Not responsible for Lost Items." that's definitely BS, it's in their establishment and they need to keep your valuables safe.
Like someone mentioned, they are a professional towing company and when towing a car, they should have access to a database or computer information that explains how to tow. any update on your situation?
remember, a lot of lawyers will offer a free consultation, speak to 3 or 4 of them and go with the one that has a good reputation.

Don't go back to that towing company again. Let an attorney deal with them.
If you take them to small claims court and handle it on your own, be sure to document everything in writing as far as estimates for repair, any rental car charges (if you had to rent one), etc. Take photos if there is visible damage to bodywork or chassis that you feel was caused by the towing company, but don't file for something they didn't do. Small claims court has a dollar limit on what you can be awarded. Don't ask for anything ridiculous like pain and suffering because you weren't injured in any way from your car being towed.
People may laugh at TV shows like People's Court but it illustrates how important it is to be well-prepared before going to court.
