What gives?
Ok, so I have a 2004 WRX, and the tranny is a notchy unlivable mess. It is REALLY notchy, and this is both before and after my short shifter installation, so it ain't just the kartboy. My friend has a 2001 2.5RS and it is not notchy at all, very loose feeling and extremely easy to shift, he can get into 1st at a roll no problem, no issues with reverse, etc...
Isn't this supposed to be the same transmission? Subaru 5spd = Subaru 5spd right, other than special STi Gearsets? Why the hell is mine so bad and his is so great? Is it just the amount of miles on the cars (I have 8k, he's got 50k), could it be the fluid, or what? ANY input would be great here, because my tranny is such a pain that it might drive me to trade for something else, but if I had HIS tranny I'd never dream of trading.

Check the pivot bolt that holds the shift lever in place, it may be overtightened. It is only supposed to be tightened to about 8 ft-lbs. which isn't much, basically that is just snug with a small ratchet or box wrench. If it's too tight the shifter will feel tighter and notchier than it really is. Also make sure the bushings the bolt passes through (on the lever) are lubricated.
As for first and reverse, those are normal characteristics for these transmissions. Reverse is a non-synchronized gear so it will often be difficult to get into. Most cannot shift easily into first while moving, some can for whatever reason but you really don't need first above a few MPH anyway.
Different fluids may help with some of the shifting issues and there is plenty of info and debate on the topic here, on NASIOC and elsewhere.

I didn't recall tightening the pivot bolt obsessively hard, because my install instructions said not to, but I'll open that up today and have a look. I'll try loosening some and then driving the car, and I'll re-lube the bushing. Thanks for the info!
my 04 seemed that way at first too, but after awhile the transmission has broken in and it feels much better, but im pretty sure it was gone within the first 8k.
one thing i did do was change my gear oil at 7500, maybe thats what made the difference
