Subaru will sell 6spds for $3500
Talked to the guys at COBB yesterday and they told me that Subaru's price for a 6spd transmission is $3500 from the factory. No more getting ripped off buying used trans for $8000 sight unseen. If they do come that cheap then if my 5spd dies a 6spd will go in. It will get pretty hard to sell gear sets for $3300 with a great option like that. Do you have to use the 4.44 diffs?

Is this true? I"m also from newengland and this sure seems like it may just be a rumor. maybe if some of our vendors from around here would confirm this we could celebrate cuz most of us arent thrilled with the 5spd design and longevity for our 02-04 wrx

That's not a bad price, but I'm thinking it might not be all that some people expect it to be. Does it include the center and front differentials as well? I assume it's a replacement part for the US's STi transmission, so it probably wouldn't include the controller for the DCCD unit. Do you need different rear drive shaft, rear diff, and/or axels? I would think it's far from a drop-in replacement for the 5-speed (I don't know everything that's required for the US 6-speed conversion), but it's good that it's sold new in this country by Subaru.

even if it does't come with everyting needed to replace a 5MT, it should drop the cost of doing so simply because they'll be official import parts. it sure beats $8k from places like Ralli Spec.
Sounds like $3500USD is just for the tranny and nothing else - I wonder how this compares to the packages that various vendors have. I would love to have a 6 spd in my car

I talked to a regional rep at the ProSolo this weekend and he said there have been a few attempts to mate one up bun because of the DCCD and related electronics no one has been able to get it to work.

It is not hard to get it to work, but it will take time and lots of small parts.
DCCD harness, DCCD switch, DCCD dash cluster, DCCD ECU.
Plus there are few wires that will need to get spliced into the ECU.
Pain in the rear if you ask me.
I prefer a regular 6MT w/ CUSCO 65/35 Tarmac Gear center diff.

The "regular" STi 6-speed ratios probably wouldn't be worthwhile to me, but if the box could be bought with a well-spaced set of slightly wider-ratio gears instead, giving a 6th at about 0.60 (and not requiring any expensive changes to the 4.44 differentials), I'd kill to swap one into my XT.
