Subaru CLUTCH = SH!T
With nearly 90k miles, I'm replacing my clutch tomorrow with an Exedy Hyper Single (includes lightweight flywheel). I bought my car in September of 2001 and haven't any problems with the clutch until now. I have had to replace the two front wheel bearings though and I've been running 200hp and ft/lb to the wheels since about 15k miles (much more now I hope).

Your dealer facked up the "fix". I have TWO '02 WRX's, both of which had bad clutch shudder....fixed under warranty (@~10k) by Carlsen Subie and never had a hint of it since. (>30k now).

Wow!
I just picked my car up today and what a difference!
Marin Subaru knew of the problem , reproduced it with my car after an overnight stay and replaced my flywheel/clutch with no problems.
If any of you are even starting to feel this very anoying problem do not hesitate to take it to your dealer , you will not believe how much better it feels.

As noted above, the clutch shudder is not exclusive to the WRX. It also afflicts 2.5L NA cars from 99 to 02 according to the TSB.
How long has the 2.5L tranny been around? Before 1999? If this problem started with 1999 models, it's the lot/batch of clutch/flywheels supplied by the OE manufacturer that slipped Subaru quality controls.
This is not a Subaru design or engineering problem; it's a quality control problem. It's a problem that originated from the OE supplier/manufacturer of the clutch/flywheel (Exedy?) that Subaru didn't detect until enough "bad" drivers started complaining.
Subaru probably used one of these bad clutch/flywheels as a replacement part on your Legacy.
So I complain about this, and people who have never been in the same car with me start mouthing off about how I can't drive AWD.
How many post-TSB '04+ Subarus or Audi Quattros have clutch shudder problems?

First, I totally agree with the above. Okay, without getting flamed, let me say that I've had two clutches in 80,000 miles, and this is driving my Subie like an old lady (I had my racer-boy days back in high school; now, I take care of my ****). I was told by my buddy Mark (40 years working on cars): "Yep, Subaru clutches are crap."
Subaru (like GM and Ford) tend to ignore problems with their vehicles (remember the SVX with its "self-destroying automatic tranny?).
I have driven sticks for over 33 years now, and NEVER had problems with "excessive wear" on my VW's (four of them), BMW's (two of 'em), Alfa Romeo, MG, Ford, Chevy, Jaguar, Honda, Toyota, Datsun (Nissan, for you youngsters) and IH four-yard truck! So, yes, Fuji Motors (nee Subaru) makes crappy clutches, unless you get lucky (maybe Sochiro wasn't hung-over on saki, the day he assembled your car).
Listen: I LOVE my Subaru... But! I am not blind to its faults. And hell, for $20K (or $32K) they should be built like bricks! The fearless leader of Subaru said, "We want to go upscale with our cars." All well and good, but if you wanna run with the big dogs, you gotta BE a big dog! And cheap clutches are NOT "upscale", big dog material. And name-calling at folks who disagree with you is--what?-- immature, goofy, whatever. Clutches CAN be poorly made, and not all failures are "driver error". No need to flame people, and hide behind your computer.
Anyway, this is my view of things, as a guy who likes to own low maintenance vehicles (Toyota Corolla: 180,000 miles with perfect compression, and Honda Accord, 225,000 miles with no problems).
regards,
Zeke

So far my new clutch and flywheel are flawless (oem TSB replacement) and the car is completely different. What gets me is , and this is very simplistic and not based on facts , but why do we get watered down versions of anything that comes over here!!!
I believe those JDM trannies are a bit different from ours , STI drivers not withstanding , lucky bastiches!, we just get weaker stuff , it seems.
My money is as good as the yen and had I known I would have held out for the sti just for that hard a## tranny , not to mention the brakes.
