there is one...broken 1-2 shift interlock arm breaking. its stated on Bulletin # 01-156-03 listed 11/18/03. it is a new bulletin put out 11/18/03 I got a copy of the Bulletin while at my small claims trial.

Seems as though SOA is trying to put a little more cushion under there ***. the district manager told me the bulletin was available to the public via the Subaru website...seems as though he lied in a court of law cause its not on there and on the bottom of the bulletin it clearly states"Subaru Service Bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians ONLY. They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur in some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper servicing of the vehicle."

"This bulletin reinforces Subaru of Amerca's (SOA) position regarding repairs to Subaru vehicles necessitated by vehicle modifications, racing or abusive driving habits."

So as of now there is only one tranny prob with the STi. Is it major like the 5spd probs or just a rare occurance?

if it's on a Subaru bulletin then the problem must be quite common, but its another failure that they associate with user abuse. it also says subaru 6 spd. so it may not be STI specific...I dont know if there are any other 6 spds that subaru makes in the U.S. (forester?)

The STi is the only one with the 6 speed in the US. 5 spd has a problem, all the manuals besides sti are 5.

SuboobaruWRSEX, what problem are you talking about regarding the 5MT? I've heard some folks breaking gears (quite a few by abuse) and the clutch shudder in the '02's, but what "major" problem are you referring to?

thanks,
Kean

Breaking gears, breaking syncros, flexing case causing this, weak clutches, and in general weak internals and poor design. Plus the fact that subaru makes it almost impossible to replace under warrantee. I have heard of 5mt's breaking after 4,000 miles on a stock car. My tranny went out at 8,000 and I was driving 100% normal. My new tranny has zero problems, but I had to have a talk with Subaru about replacing my tranny. The old tranny would grind going into reverse and first, new one dosnt. I think with the 5, it is luck of the draw wheather you get a dissaster or a decent box. The stock clutch would smell quite often and others have had this prob, replaced it with an ACT and havnt smelled it since. I am selling my 03 and getting an STi mainly for the tranny. I dont take mine to the track beacuse of fear of breaking the transmission. I dont launch hard, which is the advantage of AWD in a race. The 5mt just makes me nervous, if the 6 wasnt about the same price as an STi for price range after I sell mine, I would keep my 03 and put the 6 in it. Man I wish Subaru would have put more time into the 5 spds design.
