turbo install probs

i installed my ion turbo today, went for a test drive and have two problems.

1.) when we came back and parked in my garage there was oil dripping down, im thinking its because of the rubber hose, the two clamps i could tell were not clamping the hose tight, i think they loosened up, the hose is on there good though because we actually took the whole thing off so it would fit right, the clamps i think werent clamping tight now, i plan on buying some screw type clamps and putting those on, what do you guys think? rubber hose? where else could the oil be leaking from?

2.) during the drive my egt gauge was fluttering, not big, but the needle was just fluttering in one spot, and fluttering at idle too. i didnt even touch the gauge, the sensor or anything with that. Could it be because the sensor in the DOWNPIPE might be loose, because i know that might not be tight in? i dont think that would cause it though. Or maybe i accidentally hit the wire to the egt gauge and it unplugged? it still lighted up, but didn't look like it was reading the egts too well. any ideas?

thanks for your help

hey chris,

im getting two puddles of oil after driving, i think im going to replace those clamps on the rubber hose, im not sure if that is where its leaking, but i know they weren't super tight on there. Also the oil pipe that attaches on top of the turbo behind the wastegate, i know thats tight and not leaking, so it must be the rubber hose right? those other two pipes on the side with the washers are for coolant right?

also, my boost gauge isnt fluttering, but i am not hitting full boost, i get a max of about .7-.8 bar and then i hear a screetching noise, so i probably have a leak where the dp connects to the turbo? the egt gauge still reads but flutters as it gets hotter, and at idle.

would a leak in the downpipe cause a lose of boost though? since its after the turbo?

also, you know how i had to take off the pipes on my stock turbo and put them on the ion, that one pipe for the rubber oil return hose, on the bottom of the turbo. was there a gasket where that bottom pipe connects to the turbo? i dont remember seeing one, it was just two small bolts on each side of the flange.

If it's not leaking from the top of the turbo it has to be the bottom return line. Pull the turbo back out and make sure the return line goes on good. Once you put it back on, get under the car and look to make sure the hose is on good. Then bolt everything up again. Same thing happen to me and after the 2nd time reinstalling the turbo it was still leaking but it was because there was so much oil everywhere from the first install....once I wiped and dried up all the oil from everywhere it was fine.

good luck.

My boost gauge flutters at idle. What does this mean? Also, on your install, a loost DP would not cause a lack of boost. Some possible problems could be your boost controller, or lack of oil to the turbo. I used to have a Talon that was not getting enough oil to the turbo and would not boost above 12psi. Changed the oil feed line to a high flow unit and it boosted fine. I would check it quick, lack of oil to turbo means soon to be dead turbo.

check to make sure the oil return line isnt cracked or torn. that thing is a PITA to get to. your leak is probably an uppipe leak. if you are loosing boost, and getting squeek then i would change the up pipe gasket when you remove the trubo again.

good luck

I realize that this is a dead thread, but I am seeing oil stains on the bottom of the uppipe bracket, where it meets the turbo, towards the rear of the car. I was alerted to this by smoke, presumably from oil.

When you guys had these problems, was that bracket, moreover the rear two bolts of that bracket, stained with oil?

I have no way to get beyond that in my garage to tell where the leak might be. I assume that if oil is involved, it probably isnt just the uppipe gasket, correct?
