A slipping clutch will act pretty much the same as if you engage a gear when the car is in motion but you do not fully release the clutch pedal (riding the clutch). The engine RPM will increase with little or no increase in vehicle speed. Sometimes this is accompanied by a burning smell of the clutch friction materials. A slipping clutch resulting from wear, abuse, or oil on the friction surfaces, will usually be most noticeable in higher gears because there is more load placed on the clutch and drivetrain to accelerate the vehicle.
