shifting in auto

As an owner of both AT and MT WRXs, I put the AT in Manual mode and shift (as you said) grand turismo style, going from 1 to D (shifting to the next gear at around 6k RPM) without letting off the gas. There is a benefit to this that you dont get in an MT vehicle: uninterrupted turbo power through all gears. Most racers forget this fact and scoff when they meet an AT turbo vehicle at the line, only to be surprised when they lose.

Interesting...
I've thought about this also; but I've always heard that it's REALLY bad to do this. Automatics aren't really made to shift, merely provide low gearing for steep or bad weather situations.
Wouldn't most 'auto' drivers drive like this if it were ok? And why the development of the 'tiptronic' /sport-shift autos?
I don't know, I'm just asking. I learned stick for my wrx. I like it a lot, but there's also the issues of the weaker tranny, tempermental shifter, the old clutch judder, worn clutches, etc...
I'd been an auto driver my whole life, but I switched because of the increased turbo lag with the auto. You gotta be in control of your rpms with a turbo, IMO.
I say the tiptronic-style would be the perfect solution for the wrx, as long as it was done well (not lagging like some*Mazda*).

how is it bad for your car? im just wondering, i believe that it is..but just wondering why. and would it be ok if u let off the gas shift and then back on? yeah manual sometimes is just a pain.
It wouldn't be bad if you had a tranny cooler. I will do it to my legacy, both ways hold on the gas as well as let of the gas when i shift..
When you keep the gas pedal down when you shift, the engine revs will drop and build up again till you shift.
If you let off the gas and shift, it takes some of the stress off the tranny (thats why you should get a tranny cooler) but then the ecu will kick in and downshift it for you when you get back on the gas.......... I have had that done a couple of times.....
I don't run a tranny cooler and I probably should but the auto trannys are stronger then the manual ones.
