Lightbulb seeking wisdom for 99 RS tranny prob

i just bought a 99 rs with 37,000 miles on it. there has been a persistent squeaking noise when the clutch is not pressed in. the clutch pedal then started to stick when it's pressed in. i took it to the dealership and like i thought they said the master cylinder and the slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch need replacing, $268. i looked on sights for oem parts and that seems to be about right for the price. But, they told the squeaking noise was the throw out bearing. and on top of that the clutch and the pressure plate need replacing, $900 ! how can you tell when the clutch needs replacing. other than the annoying squeaking it shifts smoothly. is the clutch, bearing, plate something i could replace myself. also is there anywhere to buy service manuals for this car.

You can buy a service manual from fastwrx.com or subaruwrxparts.com ....It depends how mechanically inclined you are. I had to replace my master cylinder on my 944 during a race!!! with no team to help me. Needless to say it took me so long i didnt get one single more run in that day. When the entire clutch needs to be replaced you will know, your shifting will not seem smooth at all (mostly at the end of the shift there will be an early grab before the clutch is completely disengaged) Thats your first sign usually. Luckily replacing an impreza clutch is much easier than a 20year old german clutch so you might be able to handle it. Like i said if you feel comfortable messin around with stuff like that than save yourself the bull**** from the dealership. If you feel it will just be a waste of your time than see what the dealership can do. Good luck.
