RA Gearset

What do you guys think of this? My tranny is not gone "yet" *knocking on wood*, but I have been thinking about gears/trannys for a while just incase the day comes when I need one. Many have suggested the RA Gearset, but I am not 100% sure about all its features and power. Info would be great!

Here's the brief rundown-

Pros-
*slightly stronger gear castings
*much much shorter gearing improves acceleration
*cool factor from coming out of an STi type RA

Cons-
*with professional installation, gets you more than halfway to the cost of the 6 speed
*doesn't address 5MT case flex, which is the real cause of broken gears
*much much shorter gearing kills fuel economy on the freeway. Imagine not having 5th gear anymore.
*synchros are the same, so all the same shifting rules still apply. You can't "abuse" those gears any more than the stocks.

The acceleration is blinding fast but so is the STI six speed and the six is alot smoother or so i have heard...your RPM's at 90 in 5th will be around 4,750.... really BAD fuel economy.

So say I were to blow my tranny, and I wanted some gears that I could "abuse" a.k.a. not have to worry too much about breaking, what would you suggest? Keep in mind I am really not looking at anything over $3000...

These guys have some great gear sets but to set your budget at 3g's is a bit low man. A good gear set alone may cost about 3g's then you have to factor in installation of the gears and then reinstallation of your tranny. Good Luck

I have personally driven 3 cars equiped with the RA gearsets and would have to say that I think they are a great choice for folks on a budget. The chassis flex myth is a common internet spread piece of "ahem" information but for the most part the gears striped do not look like they are caused by chassis flex (I have personally looked over close to 20 broken tranny internals) and by the way that the same cars with the same drivers once replaced with RA gearsets in the same case have no problem again I would go on the line as saying put that case to rest!

You can spec the 5th gear to more fall inline with the WRX 5th which puts the fuel economy back on track

Most of the proper RA gearset kits come with new synchro's and such which are not quite the same.

Personally for a $2600 installed option I think it is hard to beat.

Oh I forgot to mention, ask how many of the RIM Subaru privarteers what tranny they run

We use the standard 5th, and no extra should you wish to use a longer one.
