anyone notice a little play in the short throw shifter(forward and aft)? Maybe an 1/8" inch or so?

Which shifer are you talking about? If it is the Kartboy shifter, try puting in the shifter bushing and that should take care of the "play". It helped on my car.

If you have a SS with a plastic ball such as an STI shifter, you will get some movement from where the plastic joint meets the shifter rod. If you look at the shifter with the boot off, try wiggling the shifter forwards and backwards and you can see some movement.

Well, if you think it's not good or messed up take it in to get looked at by a dealer.
