OK, the flip side. Who has NOT had any gearbox problems?

51K miles on my '02 WRX wagon and I can still d/s into 1st at 20mph. Clutch shudder from Day 1 for the first 5 minutes, never again after the first 5. No mods, but enthusiastic driving & lots of dirt roads.

almost 61k mi. since Sep '01. All stock, and i like to keep it spinning bet. 3-5k rpm all the time. Clutch was replaced under warrenty at 35k, although, i was really complaining about the tranny noise. the shudder showed up again but not that bad (or I got really good at avoiding it!) tranny makes loose metal noise in neutral at idle but the dealer convinced me that in 'older' tranny main shaft makes that noise... ?

Does it make the noise in gear or in neutral? If it makes more noise in neutral you need input shaft bearings promptly.

it happens in neutral ! I did mention the input shaft bearing (or 'main' shaft as they called it) but they quickly pointed to other older WRX's in the lot (~40k mi.) making the same noise. I couldnt convince them otherwise at that point...
can you think of any way to get their attention?

Ok, so you are idling, clutch in, and you hearing the ringing sound, right? And when you let the clutch out, it goes away (almost entirely)? If so, you need bearings. I don't know why they are saying you don't. Gotta go to SOA I guess.

sorry, i'll try to be clearer... after the car's fully warmed up, idling at a stop, when i let out the clutch in neutral I hear this metal rattling kinda noise (sounds almost like old MB diesel idling). As soon as I push in the clutch the noise goes away. everytime I let out the clutch in neutral i hear the same noise. Is it just input shaft spinning, or is it somethng else?

Okay, I started this thread, so now I'll chime in. No problems in 4000 miles on my 2003. No clutch drops, and just a Prodrive axle back. Reverse is easy to get into with a little trick, and 1st is reasonably selectable.......for a Subaru.

Not good enough for me though. I hate the ratios. As soon as I can get it from rallispec, its a STi RA gearset.

Try getting a used RS gearset first. Won't cost you much, and the ratios are very similar. You will definitely notice a huge difference from the WRX ratios though.

I actually did consider that, but at the end of the day, used Subaru transmission parts make me very nervous. I figure I'll absorb the extra expense for new, cryo treated stuff.
