Unhappy Need a new clutch boys, little help please?

I have a 2000 GT, and I think the clutch is going out. Haven't had a mechanic look at it yet, but the rpm's hold (clutch spins) if I shift hard or pound the accelerator (which is often). It's holding for now if I drive like a granny, but my question is this: What benefits do aftermarket clutches have over stock? Do I really need to shell out extra money for one if I drive normal? I'll be honest, I drive my car hard (ie fast shifting, pounding the throttle) so if an aftermarket clutch will wear longer or help the shifting a bit, it might be worth it.

And if so, where is a good website with soob parts/clutches I can check out? Cobb tuning is the only one I know and quite frankly, I don't feel like shelling out 500 bucks for a clutch that for all I know, just says "Cobb" on it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. since the clutch will be coming out, would I save a bit on labor if I just go for a lightweight flywheel while i'm at it?

I've been thinking about this as well as my clutch has drove me nuts for nearly 80,000. The only thing I can figure out is that the stock clutch is really weak. I haven't figured out which to get and the only information I have gathered is from the reviews section on here. I would love to do the flywheel becuase I am looking for a little bit more speed. It seems the flywheels run almost as much as the clutch. ACT and Exedy appear to be the brands.

Been there bought that

I have a 99legacy and I needed to replace the clutch and so I did the lightweight flywheel at the same time. I bought my flywheel and clutch from ultrarev.com, I bought an ACT Xact streetlite flywheel (11 pounds approx.) and ACT clutch kit subaru legacy 96-03 model. The flywheel is item #600185, the clutch kit is #SB2-HD00. You will be quite pleased with the performance, you lose a little down low, but now you can actually rev a little to launch without smelling clutch for half an hour. Your engine will definitely like being revved more and you will shift more frequently, but if you are looking for top end track type performance you will be pleased. If you drive hard this is for you. I love the setup. The car will be a little jumpy after you first get it back (stalling and launch type hops when you least expect it, I'm an experienced driver and I even succumbed occasionally). Anyway, the total for parts was about $630 and labor to install was $400 +/-, the best quote I had received before that was $1200 for OE replacement, so I was happy.
Good Luck,
Joe

Exedy makes the #1 clutch in Japan and one ofthe best for AWD cars so I guess that fits well with subaru. I went with an act Street light flywheel. Great combo.

I have read other comments about losing some power or a difference with a light flywheel. Can anyone spell this out. Pro's and con's?

Thanks in advance,
Ned

OK, I went back to the clutch reviews and what concerns me about the Exedy is that people say there is still shudder. I HATE SHUDDER! The only downside to the ACT from the reviews is that there is a lot of muscle required when driving. All I can say is that I will not buy a new clutch if the word shudder is ever associated with it.

Hope this helps.

You gain power with a lightened flywheel. Well, you gain acceleration. lighter the flywheel, the faster the engine revstherefor faster acceleration.

I have an exedy clutch, no shudder,no problems. ACT or Exedy is a good choice.
