More flywheel weight questions

I have seen lightened flywheels from 15 lbs to 11.5 lbs. Is there any reason to use a fly wheel that is lighter than stock but not as light as possible? I understand strength is an important issue but I am referring to mostly to drivability issues, although reliability issues are something I would like feed back on also. Is there a particular reason I would want a specific material like aluminum, chromoly or stainless steel? Are the performance gains worth the cost of the product and installation (I'm not comfortable messing with the transmission myself)? What about balancing the fly wheel, I have heard this mentioned but don't know jack about it? Lastly, what is the nature of the performance gains, is it just recovering HP lost in the drive train?
I would also appreciate any brand advice that could be offered. I have looked at a bunch but they all seem to make the same promisses. Is one manufacturer "at the top of the heap"?
If it matters I have a WRX with a stock cluch plate.
Thanks.

I have the Exedy Lightweight flywheel and you do have to give it come gas to get the car started. Lightening up the flywheel will allow it to rev freer than normal. But you will notice that the car will decelerate much quicker than normal. It does take some time getting used to. Now if you want comfort, then I would stay use a only a slightly lighter flywheel or stick with the stock flywheel.

I would suggest that if you want to replace to a lighter flywheel then do it when it comes time to replace the clutch.

I had and have a flywheel that is 10lbs. When I got it people where like "you are going to stall....it will take some getting use to".

WHATEVER!!! It felt like it was never replaced. EXCEPT....dang it reved fast!!! It was sweet! I have NO complaints.

But the clutch it came with (package deal) SUCKED!!! Maybe it was my fault...FRIED it!!! So anyway, when I was paying to change the clutch back to stock....a friend talked me into taking it out....I don't know why I listened, but I did.

I will sell it (now that I think of it) only cause I am not useing it right now...but if it hags arround...I WILL put it back in....So, if anyone is interested let me know before I change my mind. (unemployed right now...need the money...until I find a job) Oh ya I used it for 2 weeks...so it is still basically Brand NEW!! Just sitting in the garage.
