Lost 1st & 2nd - how do I upgrade?
(cross-posted on nasioc)
Hi guys,
I missed a shift going from 1st to 2nd, and ground pretty hard. Now I can't shift into either gear. I can start in 3rd, and 4th and 5th are fine.
The car is a '98 OBS 2.2L with 56k. I mostly use it for light off-roading and "spirited" road driving. I'd love to get into rallycross too.
I had planned on doing some tranny/clutch work in the next year or so after I bought my turbo, but it looks like the schedule is accelerated a bit.
I don't have a garage, so I'm probably going to put it in a shop to have the work done. Should I buy a new set of stronger gears? I don't want to have to go through this again, especially after the turbo. What should I buy? My clutch is a little weak, so an upgrade there is probably in order.
I have another car to drive while I am doing this, so I can afford to do some research and do this the right way.
Thanks,
maharashii

well i would take to a shop because the trans has to be the most mechanically complex unit in the driveline
how much money do you have because if you are willing to get a 6 speed it costs 6000 to 8000 before install this is the best option
but i think you need a new rear gear set and for sure a different clutch and flywheel and this is why it is so expensive http://www.rallispec.com/
a racing trans built with Synchro and Helical gears from http://www.xcceleration.com/engine-packages-trans.html
a cheaper solution is to get to just get a gearset
STi RA gears are much less than others and should hold up to rally cross these are the gears put in STis with over 300hp http://www.rallispec.com/
Chalak gears are made in Australia were wrxs have 400 and 500hp and many plp on the forum think highly of these gears
http://www.imprezars.com/chalak.htm
you can also do so searches it you want but these are what most plp do

After looking into the expense of gearsets and tranny swaps, I've decided to go with the following:
1) Exedy flywheel
2) Kartboy shifter & bushings (this should make it easier to shift)
3) Put the tranny in the shop for stock repairs (thinking it is a fork or syncro)
I just can't justify the expense of a gearset or 6mt swap, especially considering that under boost I'm only looking for around 180-200 whp.
Hopefully the shifter and a little more patience on my part with the 1-2 shift will take care of the problem.

dont forget about clutch
but for 2350(which is still alot) you can get a gear set that will take the power you are looking for
and 180-200 whp is alot for a 2.5 tranny which some can take that power level for a while and some cant and just break with simple bolt-ons and your 2.2 OBS tranny is weaker than the 2.5 so i would think this would be a sooner problem for you when you get the turbo
in short- costs more now but for power and racing purposes is better later especially with a turbo

I understand what you're saying, but there is just no way I can justify paying for these kinds of tranny upgrades.
Maybe I want to swap with a stock WRX tranny? Bolt on?
If this means no turbo power, then maybe I'll stick with n/a. I can't spend $4k on a turbo and then find out I have to pay another $4-8k just to get a transmission that can handle it.
The car iself only cost $8k, and I'm willing to go up to $4k in mods. Any more than that and I would have bought a WRX.

if you do swap a WRX trans then be sure to get the rear diff with it
but for that money it would be cheaper to just fix yours
your budget of 4k is on the small side for power mods and if 4k is the total then your money may better be spent on handling and brakes than power mods if your plan to race
i mean we dont own hondas and few plp make aftermarket parts so the price is going to be high

I would suggest a used RS transmission and rear end with LSD. Used it won't cut into your budget so much, and the ratios will make for a much quicker car.

what year donor vehicle should I look for to get the LSD?
Eventually I'll spend over $4k. I'm budgeting that much for the turbo kit. I'll do brakes and suspension in bits and pieces as I can score good deals.
I just don't want to drop $8k in upgrades a month after I bought the car.

sounds like you have things planed
if you can get the tranny and rear for less than 1500 do it
if not worry about getting your fixed
i know i want a lsd so bad but just SS stromung cat back and want to do springs shocks and tires first
