Locked in AWD

I have just been told that my 97 Impreza sport is Locked in AWD,
and that the nasty thuds that come fromt the rear end when turning sharply
are a result.
I was under the impression that the center differential was shot,
but perhaps the DCCD has an electrical problem.
Some one mentioned a fuze
and someone else something about a relay in the computer?????
And yet another suggested keeping it in Front wheel drive.

Im a nubie when it comes to AWD, and would apreciate any help you can give.
Thanking you.
