Yes, it could be the wheel bearing. They sometimes fail when subjected to hard use. My understanding is that it isn't so much the wheel bearing design but the grease that Subaru used in early WRXs. Changing the bearing (and also examining the hub for damage) and using a high-quality synthetic wheel bearing grease seems to take care of the problem. Don't mix different types of wheel bearing lubricants.

Did you notice any instability under braking? Use a lot of caution if you test your car under braking because if the wheel bearing goes you'll have a lot more problems.

Sport Compact Car Magazine had a final write-up on their project WRX and it failed one of the wheel bearings after they put a lot of hard miles on the car.
