Grinding

when i shift into first gear i feel like its grinding and its sometimes hard to shift into gear dont know if i messed up my tranny or something. but then sometimes it go's in really smooth. it also happens on other gears at times too.

should i take it to subaru for them to look at it... is it normal..can anyone give me any feedback..

also if i bought the car at a dealership thats not near where i live... will the dealership where i live still look at it? or would i have to go where i bought it..cuz its like 5 hours away. and i dont want to drive.

any feedback would be awesome

-thanks

If you find it difficult to put into first (or any) gear when the vehicle is not moving with the engine running, your clutch may no longer be disengaging properly.

Yes, other dealerships will honor your warranty if they don't detect any mods that will affect clutch or transmission operation, or signs of abuse after tearing it down. You don't have to bring it to any specific Subaru dealership. You can always call your local dealer and speak with the service department.

No, it should not be grinding. Did you read my previous post? I know STi owners who have no transmission issues. Don't resort to band-aid fixes of changing out gear lube to fix something that may be mechanical. You paid good money for a new car - make the dealer fix it!

Guys, please stay on topic. This is the STi 6MT we're talking about, not the barely adequate 5MT found in other Subies. He should not be having issues with a new car.

If the transmission grinds when going into gear they should be able to hear and feel this when they test drive your car, right? Is this something you can reproduce if they ask you to demonstrate for them?

I have to ask you this, though - how much driving experience do you have with manual transmissions?

since i first started driving, i learned from a manual car.

i notice when i put it in first it grinds (or what i think is grinding put im pretty sure) but if i go back to neutral and do it again sometimes it go's in smooth. sometimes its kinda hard to shift into gear espically 1st and sometimes 2nd.

so dont know whats going on, but i might go on monday just to be sure cuz i payin alot of money for this car and i want it to be in good conditions. dont want any problems.

what do u think wingless wonder?

I would take it in to the dealer and describe it the way you explain it here. If necessary, show them what you mean. As long as you and they can duplicate the problem, they shouldn't have any problem understanding what you're talking about.

dont mean to jack your posted, but my subie is the same, jus that im 5speed, but i do notice im not pushing that hard on my clutch either...i aint no mechanic, but i started to put more force on my clutch (not a whole lot more, jus enough) and no more grinding...i read on a different part in these forums, " there is no half way, its either you clutch is in or out" (dont remember who wrote that)

That's the reason I asked how much driving experience with a manual transmission. A common error for folks learning on their own is not depressing the clutch pedal all the way down. The clutch must be fully disengaged to shift properly.

Another n00b mistake is riding the clutch pedal while driving.

took the subie in today to the subie dealership, they test drove it around and played with it, shifted thru all the gears and such. they told me they felt nothin wrong with it and it was shifting good, he did mention that one of the times it was a little hard to shift into first but only once. but that it wasnt a problem.

they told me if the problem keeps on to take it back and they would put in some kind of differential sythn. oil they had just gotten it and said they if was good stuff and would probably stop the problem.

so now that i know theres nothin wrong with my car, everything awesome now. nomore worries. i guess it was all in my head about the grinding and stuff..

anyway thanks for all the feedbacks.
