Gear whine from transmission

Ok, so the past couple of weeks i have started getting a constant whining noise from the transmission "area." It starts at about 25-30mph and only gets louder as speed increases. I changed the fluid today and this is what the drain cap looked like. I know there is usually some ammount of shavings but I dont know what is normal and what is alot. At any rate, changing the fluid did not affect the noise in any way...
keep in mind it was pitch black out and this was under harsh yellow light. the color of the sludge/shavings was a bit more gray then brown.

those are some large visible chunks... i tell you what...

when i changed my fluid every so often i expected small chunks, but the most of it was really fine, like sawdust fine. very rarely did i see large chunks like that.

Large chunks? that doesn't look like large chunks to me, If you know anything about magnets and metal shavings that's what it does, clumps up like little lighting bolts. So to me it definitely looks like fine sawdust clumping together cuz of the magnetic force of the drain plug, but anyhoo I agree that it doesn't look good. That's quite a large amount of shavings.

Also the wining sound could be the turbo. But your sound is coming from the tranny "area" like you said.

ya its not chunks, it was just the magnetic pull making the shavings do that. its really just like a metal paste/sludge. it is definitly not the turbo. im pretty sure its my transfer case going bad.

i just did some awesome mudding that went from awesome to not so awesome when i got back on the highway... i get the same kind of noise once i hit about 45-50 through about 65 mph, the frequency gets higher with speed, not with gear change. i havent done a tranny fluid change yet but i was going to go to the store today to get some, now after seeing this im going to go right now!
