Which fluids would most likely extend the life of my tranny?
2001 Impreza RS
Inside the tranny, which parts are the least expensive to repair? I plan on keeping my car for several years. Hopefully more than 10. Hopefully more than 150K miles.
Want long life for parts.

Red Line ultrashock proof ultra light weight is the best stuff for the tyranny. It last a good long time and makes it shift like butter. You can also tell when it's time to change it cuz it's no longer bright blue. People also like Royal Purple as a long lasting fluid but the Red Line has better additives to help shifting. The stuff is not cheap but well worth it.

Redline Lightweight ShockProof Gear Oil. That stuff is like magic. And, it is pretty blue color too.
Shifting will be tougher, but it will prolong the life of your tranny (and rear diff if you put it in there).

"In MRT Rally's book "Training WRX", specific mention is given to changing out the original gear oil with a synthitic blend. This is done to help protect the gears from heat and wear."
Who to believe, MRT or MJP? Syn oils DO have superior resistance to breakdown, that's a proven fact. Are they too "thin" and allow too much syncro friction?
Is there such thing as an oil cooler for a transmission?

The fluid is very thick. Some people even put it in a warm water bucket to make it less thick to put it in.

How you shift has a much bigger impact on transmission wear than the fluid itself- but the fluid does affect how you shift. Like Alex said, the thicker fluids like Lightweight Shockproof make shifting take more time, but only when they are cold. When the gearbox warms up, Redline LS is as thin as normal gear oil. It also helps the synchros "grip" better than most other fluids. It's what I plan to put in my 6MT once it is installed.
Redline is good, but Royal Purple is the best. Almost all the oil manufacturers use Royal Purple's additive(including Redline). I personally watched my friend dyno, then he changed his oil to Royal Purple and then did another dyno and he gain 10+ horsepower. Unfortunately it's really expensive, $9 a quart. $9x5 quarts + filter=$$$. But if you're going to drive hard, then put the best stuff in right? I'm changing my oil this week to Royal Purple.
