yea, i have that problem, but I've just increased the RPM with double clutching to where I think the car will be if I was already in first rolling, and it sucks it in.

I dont do it often as I dont want my 1st gear to get raked off ><. I just kinda leave it in 2nd and do some clutch play to roll it instead of bog it.

double clutching will definitely help, also try changing the tranny fluid to something better. Really, you should be able to get into first (although you will need to give it more of a push than normal downshifting) when you need it, if the wheels are spinning too fast to allow you to get into 1st, you can probably just use 2nd.

But what do I know, I have close ratio gears

If you're carefull you can do it up to 15-20mph (I could do it in my 02 wrx wagon). Like posted above, double clutch it...but also rev the engine to ~4K rpms (in neutral) and slowly push the shifter into first...NEVER force it!!

Although some 02/03 wrx trannys are just ****ed. A buddy of mine had a garbage first gear syncro that would grind into first from a dead stop with the clutch to the floor.
