downshifting

not that ive ever done it, but I was just wondering:
what happens when you downshift from, say, 3rd to 1st and let the clutch out all the way, and you're going WAY too fast?

will the engine rev past the rev limiter since your going that fast?

on another note, how do Japanese people, with all those characters, use text messaging?
just a thought i had today

Well, first off, good luck getting it in to 1st at that speed. 5th - 2nd would be more likely.

And if you were to do this and pop the clutch out quickly the engine would rev FAR past it's limiter and go boom.

Your rev limiter isn't going to do anything for you when you do that...

good luck getting in first, though. it's hard enough from second when you're going more than 10 mph

as for the japanese text message, they have pretty sophisticated software to deal with text input, but it usually amounts to a lot of same key pressing. those japanese teenagers are blindingly fast at it too...scary.

then you press the brakes....come to a stop.....get out.....
and pick up your gearbox off the ground
The rev limiter works by cutting fuel, thus, when you are accelerating and the fuel is cut the engine is stopped from revving any further. This works because your foot is planted, causing gas to be poured in and the rpms to climb. Cut the fuel, RPMS stop. Downshift wrong, and the transmission/drivetrain are going to be what causes the engine to speed up. Cutting fuel won't do a darn thing.

You downshift from 4th to 2nd (at speeds > 80) and you can pretty much kiss your motor bye bye. Just look at all the guys with the RSX-S who have done that by accident - transmission and stuff were fine, motor was in multiple pieces.

As Sonic describes, there would be no "bounce off" of the rev limiter. A successful engagement into 1st at a high rate of speed would force the engine to try and keep up with the rest of the drivetrain. .......resulting in an instant "over-rev" of the engine and (more than likely) a catastropic failure.

Once I thought I had a sixth gear and put it in reverse. but I realized what I was doing and never let the clutch out. it just grinded pretty quick. glad nothing happend. as for putting it into first. It may be difficult cuz it might grind but I beleive it will blow your tranny or engine may blow.

I don't have any problem shifting into first from second. I always hear people talking about how difficult it is.

You only need about 50 characters to communicate fully in Japanese.

Actually your pressure plate would explode, not your engine, however it is still ill advised.
