This linked thread may prove helpful on the 6MT swap into a WRX, if you haven't already read it:

you'll need a 3.9 ring and pinion for the rear diff to compensate for the different center differential gearing (WRX 1:1.1 .. STI 1:1)
you'll need to cut your driveshaft ... or get a driveshaft from an auto
make absolutely sure that you're getting a 6MT with the viscous LSD and not a DCCD w/o the controller. If you get the DCCD and do not hook up a controller your center diff will essentially be an open diff.
as far as i can remember from doing my swap that's what you need ... but then again it's been 3 or 4 yrs.
feel free to pm with questions ... i'll help if i can

open diff is when if one tire loses traction all the power is put to the tire without traction
a limited slip diff (LSD) is when one tire loses traction the diff splits the power between the tire that has traction and the one that doesn't
the stock STi has some kind of LSD .. I'm not sure which.

ok i put an 05 trans in w/ out hooking up the dccd. shouldnt it just go to the stock wrx mode w/ the 65/35 split? from all the info i've read about the swap they say if you dont use the dccd the trans will automatically go to 65/35. 65% rear and 35% front.
that what they say .... get on some snow and you'll know what really happens
straight forward you'll be ok .... but take it to some lose gravel or snow or sand and you'll barely get any power put to the fronts.
Long story short ... my rear diff got swapped with an open diff and one of the axles disconnected itself from the rear diff. If the center diff actually put 35% to the fronts in default the car should have moved .... it didn't. I put the DCCD controller in a few weeks after reconnecting the axle and the next time the rear axle disconnected I just moved the DCCD controller out of its "open" detent and the car drove almost normal.

if an open diff puts power to the side w/ least traction and if both front tires have traction shouldnt you still be able to drive? i understand what you are saying somewhat however i am not sure how to fix this w/out putting in the dccd.

there needs to be a sticky called "parts you need for a 6 speed swap". I could swear this gets asked at least once a month.
the DCCD splits power between the front and rear axles. If the rear axle has the least traction and the center diff (DCCD) is basically an open diff ... then the power goes to the rears.
there is a little .. VERY little that goes to the front ... I was able to move at about 2ft per hour on level or declining roads.

ok im trying to see where i can get any of these parts to get an idea of what i want but cant find anyone who is selling these *rare* items. im gonna try to find more info on my free time but any help with the following will help
If i get a 6spd tranny w/o the dccd, should i just get the what i hear to be unbreakable r180 rear end. will i still need to swap ring gear, etc. and is there a driveshaft that i could buy to fit this setup. as for axles do i replace all four or just the rear.

ok i read a few articles and different posts and have gotten a few things straight. I still need help locating where i can buy these parts but better understand what i need.
I obviously dont want dccd, so 6MT tranny and shifter and the fist things. i was wondering about the factory option short shifter for the sti from thier catalog. better than stock? or waste of money? the 6MT tranny needs to match either two of the no-dccd tranny codes. where are these codes located on the case?
now to the driveshaft. i i hear that there are a couple of choices . have a shop cut the factory shaft from the 5MT , buy the oem auto driveshaft, or get a 6Spd driveshaft which uses a u-joint instead of ball joint. what year of the auto shaft should be used, same for the 6Spd, what year? i want to make sure these shafts will all connect to the 6 spd tranny and the r180 or facotry wrx diff(r160? am i right.)
all the diffs- this is where i need the most help. Are there special diffs that are used for the dccd or are they all the same. this will help me from buying the wrong parts. i also worry about getting a different setup for the center or rear diff w/o changing the front diff. i want to keep a similar setup w/o getting rid of ABS, which i hear happens when you get a front lsd. factory 02' wrx's have what type of diffs. front? center? and rear?.
ok as you can see im lossing myself here. i'll stop here and come back when i can sift through some more info. thanks for ur help.

OK .... relax
Differentials:
You Will be changing your center diff from a 1.1 to 1 (factory '02) to a 1 to 1 (factory 6speed)
This Requires that you change your rear gear ratio (the actual LSD can stay the same). The stock '02 WRX has 3.73 gears in the rear end ... the front is 3.9. This is how they achieve a rear bias. The only way the center LSD doesn't blow itself up is it spins the rear 1.1 times for every time it spins the front 1 time. 3.73x1.1=3.9. If you do not change the rear gearing to a 3.9 the rear wheels will rotate 1.1 times for every 1 rotation of the front tires. <- bad
The only parts you HAVE to change in the rear diff are the ring and pinion gear.
The rear diff will work with your current (160) axles because the diff itself is not changed ... just the gears that drive it are changed.
My front 160 axles slid right into the front diff that was in the JDM tranny I got.
My understanding is that you can change to 180 axles ... but it's gonna cost you ...... alot.
Stock Diffs (I think, don't quote me):
Rear ... viscous limited
Front .. Suretrack
Center .. viscous
Driveshaft:
Those choices will all work. I'm sorry I can't help you with years ... I just cut and welded my 5speed driveshaft.
Tranny codes:
Located on the top of the tranny towards the front.
Call RalliSpec ... they helped me more than I know. They're east coast ... so wake up early
I got my tranny from Gruppe-S ... and they sent me a DCCD when I ordered a nonDCCD. There are bonuses to a DCCD tranny though .... but you spend more to get the controller.
good luck

So both the front and center diffs are inside the tranny. then how do i make sure i get a tranny without a front lsd, so that i can retain ABS.
32000AF460 Standard
32000AF500 w/ SureTrac
32000AF470 w/ DCCD and SureTrack
Tranny codes provided by the Admin.
Not sure if this means the both diffs are that type. Am i wrong.
What about the short shifter assembly sold at the subie dealer, listed as a short shifter for the 6spd if this is better than the standard assembly i would prefer to get this.
