it is dying when the rpm's are falling down rapidly, and don't catch idle. Once in a while it will stumble and the ECU revs it up or sometimes I hit the gas to keep RPM's up

Have you changed fluids? Because the fluid is what allows the car to shift gears and what not. Also how many miles does your TC have? It could be time for a new one.

I've had the same issue on a couple of non-Subaru automatics in the past, and both times it was the idle control motor that died. I don't know what Subaru uses in place of that device, but if it's easily reproduceable, I'd suggest visiting a dealer or a mechanic who knows his stuff. I don't think what you're experiencing has a quick fix, but it could be any number of things, so maybe.

Yup, I'd bet that's what it is. Idle-air controller (IAC) is on the left side of your intake manifold. There should be 2 phillips head screws sticking up. Loosen both of the phillips-head screws and turn it clockwise all the way, then tighten them down. If that doesn't help the problem and raise up the idle significantly, then you know your idle air is broken.
