300 Whp tranny problems

I don't buy all this "my transmission sucks" crap. I think alot of people don't know how to drive correctly and beat the crap out of the drivetrain. In an AWD car with tons of traction (even more with aftermarket tires and wheels) something is going to give. Now I agree that we should have gotten the 5sp RA tranny to begin with but we didn't. I think the stock tranny will hold up fine if you understand that something is going to give everytime you drag launch. I may be the tires breaking loose(great), or the clutch slipping(ok), or you gears snapping(bad). If you understand this and adjust how you drive to take this into acount your tranny will last longer.

I agree with you that constant hard launches can affect your transmission (obviously the engine as well). Having said that, for the most part, I'm a pretty conservative driver, and though I will not deny I launch my car from time to time, they are not hard enough to cause the transmission to fail. Furthermore, the transmission acted up while crusing to AZ. Ultimately I think the ones that have not experienced anything bad with their cars will think like you guys and the ones that do have problems will complain (warranted or otherwise).

warranty
you should just sue subaru if they will not cover you. i had an injen intake and thats it. my transmission went out once and they repaired it under warranty. i had a complete failure four thousand miles later. i brought it to subaru and they claimed abuse since there was grass in the frame and other things. i sued them in small claims court for the price of a new transmission and rental car and won. they have to prove that you abused it, and grass and a couple scrapes and 10 hp according to my judge does not prove anything! i was 21 at the time. i do believe the transmission is ok, but you must baby it. if you do anything else it is f'ed. but they have a warranty for a reason. if you have more mods than i did, including exhaust and other things, i dont believe SOA should cover it. just my .02

I find it odd that people think that just a few drag or hard launches (abuse) is not reason to void a warranty...
Abuse is abuse, it doesn't matter if it happens once in a while or every time you get behind the wheel, the only thing that changes is wether or not something breaks when you abuse it. If you try a hard launch out of the dealership when you first buy the car and the tranny breaks, then you're still just as SOL as when you break gears at 20k.
As for the amount of people with tranny problems, you're looking at an enthusiasts forum, if you were to poll all of the subaru drivers who own WRX's most of the ones with problems drive their cars hard, and those are but a small percentage of the total owners.

If you don't care about over-the-top turbo performance, you buy an OBS/Forester; or Legacy/Outback, if ya got the extra $.
The Mirror's complaints are the ones I hear over and over, and are the main reason I haven't gotten one...yet.

If the car was meant to be driven to and from church and never driven and launched hard then don't advertise it as a performance car. It is hypocritical to show commercials of WRX's sliding around corners and make acceleration claims marketing the car to a specific group of enthusists, then turn around and say the car shouldn't be driven that way. But I still contend any AWD car with enough launches will fail.

much much safer
