i bought this car last november from a individual. i had to garage for a recall on
flywheel. the car sat thru winter. we got car out in april. i noticed the gears very
sloppy. we took back to garage . they had to replace bushings. not a week
after that my husband drove to store. he stopped at a light and when he went
to pull out he could not get into gear. the clutch went to floor and it was back in
garage . now the garage is stating the clutch, pressure plate and 2nd gear are
blown in car. this car has 35750 miles. everything was covered at dealership until
now. subaru is claiming we abused the car. they don't want to fix anything.
trying to charge me 5300 dollars to fix. i have tried everything but going to
court about the warranty issue.
anyone have any suggestions?
theresa
i love this car, but now i see what trouble everyone is having with it.
keep it or get rid of it ?
i am not a fast driving person and do not abuse this car. daily driver.

pissed
hi,
i am new to this forum and i would just like to say how much i am starting to get pissed off due to lack of warranty coverage. i have had a similar problem to all of these posted and i am not satisfied with how it is being handled
I got my car about a year ago and since then ive been having a crap load of tranny problems. at 35,000 miles i had the minor grinding in 3rd and 4th gears so i took car of it immediately and thank god it was covered. (oh this was also after the 30,000 mile check up and oil change etc.) and for about a month after it was fixed until i started noticing slight problems like the rpms shooting up and immediately dropping after i hit the accelerator(slipping of the clutch), a strang noise when slowing down, and i had one hell of a time trying to get it into first and reverse. (note this was after the checkup and the so called repairs by subaru) and about two days ago everything went down the toilet. when i was driving home the gears just stopped working all together. well since i am now sitting at 42,000 miles and covered by "extended warranty" and they claim that this was abuse and that they want 2,000 dollars to repair the problem. i know that if i get this done they are gonna just fix it like they did last time and i am gonna be in there in another few months.
i dont know why i got the stupid extended warranty if they dont cover the problems with the car. according to them they fixed my car. well if it was fixed then why did it only last 7,000 miles before it started turning to **** again. i say take the bastards to court, because this gay as hell.

No, its not abuse unless you drive like a maniac. it is a poor transmission
O.K. Say that these problems arise from "driver abuse", who's to say what is abuse on the transmission. In 42,000 miles of driving its safe to say that your average Joe (who owns a WRX) stop and go anywhere from 10 to 20 times every 50 miles. So lets just go with 10 which is the lowest. Therefore, that means that in 42,000 miles of driving Joe has come to a stop and gone again about 8,400 times. So, say if Joe opened it up and showed off the car once, twice, say 10 times in that 8,400 times, then the transmission would have been released at 4k to 5k rpms (from a stop of course). This is less than .1 percent that it has been "abused". Even if Joe has dropped the clutch at 4k to 5k rpms 100 times, then that would be just over 1.19 percent of the clutch stop and go usage as abuse. If Joe pays 24 thousand dollars for a sports car, Joe should expect to have had stressed the clutch at least 10 times out of 8,000 times. So if the Subaru mechanic, or whoever evaluates the level of abuse, is trying to tell me that .1 percent of dropping the clutch is abuse then they can go back to high school and get their G.E.D. (General Education Degree). Not to mention that my assumptions did not take into account the day to day, stop and go traffic, nor just changing gears, downshifting to save brakes every once in a while, etc... If you so much as drop that clutch at 4k to 5k rpms any more than .1 percent of the time. Lets just say Joe just got is prison style. After all of this analysis, my advice is to upgrade the transmission immediately. It will save you money in the long run (120,000 miles = 3 brand *** ramming new transmissions). Also, use the extended warranty as bedding for your pet, and that is if you bought one.

I don't mean to be rude to anyone out there who loves their Subaru. For all of you who are having issues don't feel bad Subaru of America stands behind their vehicles, way behind. I am stuck with mine for now but as soon as I can it's gone. I have a TS 2.5 2004 Impreza with an automatic shift. I was told to downshift into third if the engine hitching while changing gears bothered me. According to Subaru of America & my Subaru auto mechanic this is what I should do. It's not a transmission problem, the little slips and bucks, I'm being fussy about a hard shift point. Now has anyone ever heard of a hard shift point in a 8 month old car? Oh and did I mention my Impreza now has overdrive? According to the same two geniuses who told me about the hard shift point drive is overdrive & third is drive. Too bad someone didn't fix the owners manual to indicate this drive & overdrive thing, oh well. So how do I really feel? Good bye Subaru, Hello Toyota!!!
But there is a point to this story... There is apparently an ongoing investigation into the faulty transmissions on the '02 Impreza's here is the link...

I guess if you are going to have to pay $5000.00 + you may as well check it out!!

theresa laporta:
the subaru dealer in my area did almost the exact same thing to me
only they told me they looked at the clutch and flywheel and that they were fine, but 500miles later the clutch was burned to nothing.
anyways, check out the link on the i-club home page to the law firm investigating the problems
hopefully we will all get what we should have gotten from the dealerships in the first place

Hey
The 5 speed manual trannies aren't as bad as everyone says they are!
If ppl abuse the tranny on any car, they will break down!
Another reason why it seems like they are so terrible is because, we only read the threads about now bad they are, cuz no one will start a thread saying they tranny is still working after x amount of miles
