Need help on Launch.
I was told to do this, and it works if you perfect it...
When you're at the strip and you stage, hold the rpms @ ~ 3000. While you are holding the RPMs there, bring the clutch out to the point of friction (where it wants to move the car, but it doesn't). Now, as the lights drop, at about the second yellow, floor it and just lift your foot off the clutch as about the same speed. Meaning, don't pop the clutch... If you do this, by the time the light is green, you should be at about 5500rpms and at least at 0psi when you launch. This will net at least a 1.8 60ft. I have not tried it on the track yet, (god knows I need to), but on the street it is perfect! On a side not: if you just hold the rpms at like 4000 and then slip the clutch you are launching deep into vacuum, which will get you +2.0 60fts. Good luck and just practice...
BTW: This launch was done on a car over 93 times at the drag strip and the stock tranny is still in tact on the car I learned from. Also, I gave you an example of how to do it at the strip, use common sense to figure it out when you're on the street according to lights, etc...

if you want to try a different launch, i let the clutch out until the car is about to move, then rev the car between 5000 and 6000 and keep it doing it (dont hold, keep tapping the gas) then when the light is about to turn dump the clutch and floor the gas. this will get about 1.7-1.8 everytime at the track. i did this with my 02 wrx with stock tranny about 40 times, then finally i broke 3rd gear on the last run of last season. it sucked
o well, good luck

dragging. sigh. our cars are def. not but for it... but it's too fun to say no. lol.
i don't know how to launch well, but i get decent times. Once the tree starts couting down, i hold the gas to 4-5K, the i just slip it out pretty quick. maybe 1.5 secs or so. wait.. that's not quick. oh well. i don't smell burning anyways. Car doesn't lurch or anything. it's pretty smooth. if you're @ the track, it's really important to just get the lights down. lol.
dumping. ouch. bad idea. either drive your car hard and use the warranty, or take it easy. There's not point in driving hard later on when the warranty is about to or has expired. That's of course if you don't have money and/or time to fix it. i personally can't stand beating up my car. I never feel bad for my brakes and tires, only my car. DUmping and Powershifting is pretty harsh. It's your choice how you want to launch. Most people @ the track slip instead-that way they will be able to race for the remainder of the night. lol.

Far as i know the new WRX 04's have a built in slip mechanism to prevent extreme pressure on the transmission. I believe it purposely slips in order to save the tranny from harder drops.
Of course if you dump your clutch at high rpm you are still going to smoke your clutch but hopefully this new feature prevents you from braking the gears.

JUST bought a sti yesterday......
Hey all just bought a sti yesterday after countless of hours deciding 1.EVO OR 2. STI. Although i never got a chance to test drive the evo, im really glad i got the sti, after hearing all these stories about their weak clutch. but anyways.
my car has 300 miles on it ,how long should i wait before i can really practice my launches ? or do i not have to wait? and will launching that soon do any harm in the near year or two as for performance???.
sorry so many ?s but one more
i did take the sti out today to practice my launches anyways,, just becasue i couldnt take it anymore. this is my first awd ever. and i have a g-tech that shows my 1/8 and 1/4. and put it this way, im not even going to post my times on here cause its really embarrising. i will tell you my major problems. my 60ft was like a 2.3-2.5 i never had any inputs on launcing but all i can say i SUCK. my friend bought one 3 months ago and he needed alot of practice also. + one free clutch under warranty(shhhhhhh) when i tried to launch i went to 4000 to 4300 and just tried to dump it (only twice) and it just bogged then i tried the same rpms and tried to slip it and my times were still bad. also what is a good rpm to shift at for each gear, because i try to go past 6000 and it looses hp in 1st and 2nd but then 3rd seems fine till 7000
once again sorry to ask all these questions but im just trying to get another subbie out there that can stomp on and hang with anything stock.
