3.0 Tribeca Engine vs. Stock Sti Engine

I read in a magazine a few months back that Perrin swapped a Subaru 6 cylinder 3.0 liter b9 tribeca engine into a new 2006 STi which was recently shown at SEMA.. I was wondering what you guys think about this and more importantly would it give the STi more aftermarket potential then the standard EJ25 engine. Also how much do you think it would cost to swap the two. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, thanks.

it's an expensive thing to do

you can swap just about any motor into any car for 15 grand

2JZ rear wheel STI instead

We have built three of these H6 3.0 / Impreza platforms. Perrin's H6 in an 06 STI with a GT35R, another H6 3.0 in my 02 WRX, and another H6 2.0 in a GC8. We are completing two more H6 swaps this month, one in a new Legacy GT, and the other in an older Legacy GT.

Once we complete these swaps, we will have a much better idea as to the costing for the custom work, as well as the wireing needed for each combination. I have been driving my H6 WRX around town for about a month now and it is incredible. The low end torque is great, and the spool up with a GT30R is like a stock STI.

There are several detailed posts on Nasioc about the cars:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1038296

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=959768

Here are a few shots of some of the configurations:

This dyno graphs is from Jeff's H6 06 STI, compared to a stock 06 STI. The advantage of the H6 over the stock is felt everywhere. The car makes more torque at every RPM point, even with the much larger GT35R.

Both of these cars are being upgrade to new blocks with sleeves, rods, and new valvetrain componets. We are also switching to the GT40R, which should open up a bit more power.

Wasn't Gruppe-S trying to do one of these swaps for around 15999.

The power produced on these H6 motors is limited by two important factors.

(1 ) The stock H6 rods are very very thin. They are a smaller casting then even the WRX rods.

(2) The stock valve springs are very light. 15lbs on the exhaust side. With springs this light, 16psi is about as far as you can go.

These motors do have our 8:1 H6 Supertec pistons, as running the stock 10:1 pistons would be problematic.

To push the envelope further, we have three H6 blocks in the process of being sleeved, as well as Pauter Rods and upgraded valvespring componets. With these in the mix, it should be possible to run significant levels of boost and resulting power. I'll keep all of you updated as this progresses.
