Swaping out my EJ20 Short block for a EJ22T S.B. what else will i need?
Ok, i have 91 EJ22T short block that i will be putting into my WRX i was wondering what parts should i replace while i'm in there and everything is apart.
I can think of some for sure like; headgaskets, and gaskets for the intake manifold, throttle body, oil, and coolent. But should I replace the timing belt, and belts since i have 34,000 miles while i'm there? Now if someone came up w/ a check list of stuff i should get please let me know.
Thank you,
mario
Updated Info:
Here are some of the parts you are going to need for this swap and more if you want to do what i'm doing. I will be stroking the 2.2 to a 2.4. Factor in that you will need new parts if stuff is damaged or worn completely. I will try my best to do a right up as soon as i get all that i need just to put my short block together and the rest of the swap.
Here is my list so far:
CP pistons
CP Piston rings
2.5 phase I crank
New rod bolts
New rod bearings
New main berings
Subaru gasket set
2.0 head gasket or Cosmetic HG
ARP head studs
2.2 Block studs
New intake manifold gasket
New valve cover gasket
Fuji bond (stuff that holds the to havles together)
Valve cover sealent
Timing Belt
Alt belt
A/C belt
Timing Belt Tensioner
2.2 Oil pump maybe ( missing an oil piston Squirter in cyl#4)
Water pump
PWR radiator
Thats all i can think of right now, i'm pretty sure thats it
Now for things i want:
FP green
stock mod inj.
samco inlet hose
Hydra Nemisis
Valve train upgrade (8500 RPM)
Maybe JUN 264 cams
oh and a Car that will run after all this is done
With cutom pistons HG from Crawford i will have a compression ration of 8.5:1

Are you sure the 2.2 gasgets can be used on 2.0?
Also, when choosing a gasget, figure out what compression you want and what compression you will get when using a particular thickness gasget.
I would replace the t-belt. It will be off anyways, so why not put a new one? Get a better belt too. Like PE or STi. Good investment.
Also, I would definetely get a new t-belt tentioner.

Woops i was wrong i wil be using the 2.0 headgaskets w/ the 2.2T. I guess timing belt as well as the tensioner will be done. Thanks for the advice Alex.

your going to have a very low CR because a stock 2.2t is about 8.0 and thats with SOHC heads and you are puting DOHC on
i would look at getting new pistons or very thin head gasket .060" should get you about 8.0 but you might need to get a copper gasket to get one that thin

Ok here is everything i have come up w/ for now that i need to purchase to make this swap work and other things since the motor will be out anyway.
Wrx head gasket
2.2T gasket kit
Wrx timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
alt. belt
AC belt
2.2T Block Studs
2.0 head studs
2.2T oil pump
(maybe) Piston rings for 2.2T
If anyone else can think of anything else i should have to get, let me know. this is the first actual swap i will do on my own but have help w/ another b4. Thank god i'm mechanicallt inclined, thats all i have going for me

EDIT: new info
1) If you mated a EJ22T block (stock internals) with our EJ20 heads and used a EJ22T head gasket the compression ratio would be *drumroll please* 7.27:1 too low.
2) If you did the same mating with a thinner head gasket of say... 0.027cm as opposed to the stock EJ22T 0.152cm the compression ratio would be 8.0:1 .... thats our stock EJ20 compression.
I just need to still find out what our WRX head gasket thickness is

I'm glad i stumbled upon this thread. I've been looking into this same option. I've been able to find some entire ej22t's pretty cheap from junkyards.. And i've been looking around, doing some research to see what is needed to do the frankenstein with the ej22 shortblock and wrx heads, etc.
Anyone else know if the wrx trans or 2.5rs trans will bolt up to the ej22 block? If so, which clutch/flywheel to use?

Ok so far from what i have been gathering w/ proven knowledge is that you have to get custom pistons. Reason is that you cannot run the stcok 2.2 pistons because they will either run way to close to the valves or they will diffinatelty run into the valves. They are just some tall pistons. So my swap will be slowed down till i can come up w/ the cash to purchase some CP pistons designed for this swap.

You cannot use 2.0 head gaskets. They will hang into the combustion chamber and burn. There are very few choices for 2.2 head gaskets. I'm using cometic, the only one they make for a 2.2. I had my local machine shop take a little off the block deck, and a little off the heads to raise compression to 8.5/1 for racing with leaded race fuel. The motor will be more efficient.
There is no need to change the 2.2 pistons. wrx heads will work fine. EJ20 head boltz will work also, but I went with ARP head studs. The 2.2 will have MORE clearance between the valves and the piston, hence the 7.4:1 compression ratio you will get.
I am having a shop make up some washers to have cam gears adjustable to correct the timing, as the heads will now be closer to the centerline of crank.
I bought a brand new EJ22 from Liberty Subaru for only $1300. Get factory matched bearings, new crank, new pistons/rings.
I put in my Crower con-rods from my EJ20. They will fit all 4cyl. Suby motors. OEM Pistons are great, and the oil squirters help keep piston cool if running no2, or high boost.
There is a crankcase vent on top of EJ22 that needs to be removed and blocked, in order to have the WRX coolant passage fit on top of motor.

HUH? The EJ22 has a bigger bore. You have to use 2.2 gaskets.
Also, when choosing a gasget, figure out what compression you want and what compression you will get when using a particular thickness gasget.
I have found no options avaliable.
I would replace the t-belt. It will be off anyways, so why not put a new one? Get a better belt too. Like PE or STi. Good investment.
Why would it be off??
If it won't make you go faster......forget it.
Also, I would definetely get a new t-belt tentioner.
