RS or L for project?
Being searching around the website for a while now and finally decided to register and post up a couple questions. I'm currently looking for a Impreza *pre bug eyes* for a project. My goal will be:
Daily Driver once completed.
Mild body kit
17" Rims *I like the stock gold STI rims*
Fresh Paint, nothing crazy, just one color, probally the stock color to keep price down.
WRX engine swap since i'm able find the complete engine/trans for decent prices. Would keep the engine pretty much stock for the meantime. I know the RS tranny works well with the WRX engine but keep reading.
Upgraded brakes/suspension. Nothing overboard, not looking for top of the line but would still want good quality.
Interior upgraded with better driver/passenger seats.
Upgraded sound system. Not a boom box with 8 12" subs in the back. Upgraded head unit, interior speakers, amp/sub maybe something like a stealhbox or the Ifinity Basslink, I don't need to rattle the guy's ***** sitting next to me at the light.
Upgraded headlights and taillights *no altezzas*
Going for a real clean/simplistic look, which is what i generally see with subaru owners who decide to upgrade.
What are the years for the Impreza L should I be looking at for what I want to do. For the wrx swap to work, for bodykits to fit, headlight/taillights, etc...
Is there any differences for the engine/trans swap if I go with the L or the RS? I'm going to be doing the complete wrx engine/trans.
It would be easier to find an L with high miles on it than finding a RS. Is there any big difference between the RS and L for what I'm looking to do? I'm pretty much reworking the whole car so I'm not worried about the original apperance of the car excluding major dents/dings/rust.
Thanks,
Raz

If you plan to swap the motor anyway, I'd get an L and save about $4,000. Buying an RS is only worth it if you plan to leave the EJ25 in it, or if you're REALLY set on having the RS look. It's tough to come up with the conversion parts to make an L look like an RS, but it's been done. Basically, any year AWD Impreza will accept the EJ20, but you'll have to deal with the wiring issue regardless.
