motor swap Q - tranny too?

Just curious - if I did a motor swap from my 02 wrx 2.0 turbo motor to a newer STi motor (that ran on a 6-speed), would I also have to change my tranny too?

Or would it work with my stock 5-speed? I know it's probably not recommended due to the increase in power, but would it work? and could it possibly handle it with aggressive or trackday driving?

i have an sti motor swap on my wrx transmission .Its fine. It comes down to how much money you wanna spend and the application of the car. 6 sp is a completely different animal than a 5 speed.

so it is possible. good to know.... I would like to keep it as my daily driver and do an occasional trackday every month or so.

I have 6-7 months left on a powertrain warranty which includes the motor and tranny. I would imagine it would be hard (and unbelievable) to blow both at the same time. Nonetheless, giving it some thought.

Thanks!

blowing your motor is easy to do.. Just take it to Thunder hill on a hot summer day without an oil cooler I think thunder hill killed 3 or 4 cars on one single day this year.

Quote for content... I've been to plenty of hot track days. My guess is the lack of oil coolers or the temperature were not what these cars had in common. Just saying...

I agree with ipozestu. If i blew the motor at Thill, it would cost me a lot to tow it home.

it was an unfortunate coincidence. This is the day the ej257 exploded and shot parts through the block. Brutal conditions of course are contributing factors but who knows why things happened right when they did. One of the cars had a bearing seize up on the way home and had to be towed. You mention going to plenty of hot track days. Would you mind posting your mod list? I'd just like to see what has lasted on the track. With your application do you need to take cool down laps a lot?

It's kind of interesting - I never really thought about over-heating when I was on a bike at Thill with 104-105 degree weather. The motor would get up to about 200 degrees but I never once thought it would over-heat.

the WRX seems to be very temperamental and needs to be watched carefully. And just out of curiosity, what kind of lap times are the average and fast guys doing?
