Mazda pickup to WRX conversion....DBTuned FTW!
Sooooo... what you're saying is that the bulb will still be in place, and it will come on when you flip the key as the ECU does it's initial systems check (when it powers up the drivers and makes sure all the sensors are giving signals), but it won't come on again after that?

What if the B.A.R. ref busts out his breakout box? I mean, to get the initial official seal-of-approval? Since a WRX-into-Mazda truck swap is so off the wall, you would think the guy would put on some gloves and administer a full pelvic exam, so to speak.
What I mean to say is... if you bypass or defeat some of the features of the engine's original emission control system (like the vacuum sensor in the fuel tank to detect vapor leaks) and the ref finds out about it, you'll have a really tough time trying to convice the ref that you've set things right the second time you go to get the cert. I'm not trying to bust your ballz, I would just like to see him succeed after he put all that effort into it.

Since Matt is using an OEM downpipe (I think) it's a moot point for him. He won't need any CEL defeats for his tune before he goes to the referree. Also, Subaru gas tanks are pressurized, not under a vacuum... plus the best he ref can do is look at the inputs for that sensor through electronic means, but he can't necessarily figure out what's actually generating that signal...

umm...gotta have an exhaust for smog. duh
the aftermarket exhaust, will be crazy....all heat wrapped and everything cool.
although, i dunno how far i'll take the exhaust(like.....out the back? or no..we will see.
i need to find a few busted up exhausts so that i can use them for flanges and whathaveyou.

Well yeah, but that doesn't mean 1.25" piping is a good idea.
Just fab whatever you want, catback doesn't matter for smog. You can run trucker stacks if you want, or leg pipes.

i'm just going to mod the living hell out of a stock exhaust, that way its cheap cheap. and then while the cab and bed are off, i'll also try and fab up/figure out where it will be going.
its all in good fun.. i just want this thing in the truck...
but, it should be cool when all is said and done

The long block is assembled.
The bent valves luckily didn't wipe out the valve guides or pistons.
Waiting on a few valve adjusting shims(dealer doesn't stock 'em) before the lovely valve covers go back on.
I have to strip the intake so it can be painted & then re-assemble it.
