? about trannys

I have been searching this forum and cant seem to get a solid answer to my question. I am looking into buying a 2.5 rs and I keep finding auto trannys for a lot cheaper than manuals. I would prefer to buy a manual but price and availability of a manual make it a pain. What does it take to do a manual conversion. I am an technician so the labor isnt a problem. I just dont know what parts I would have to get. thanks for your help and if there is a thread somewhere about this can somebody point me in that direction.

I just did the swap on my WRX.

majority of parts: $1250 (good deal)
upgraded tranny to RA Gears: $1000
labor & misc parts: $1700
total: $3950

give or take a few hundred too depending on what kind of deals you get.

If your going to switch to a manual, you may want to consider a 6-speed and R-180 Rear diff. It's a much stronger transmission.

it depends what his goals are for the car are. Most of the time a complete 6 speed swap will be overkill and way too expensive....the tranny alone can go for $6000. Gruppe-s' cryo treated RA gears can hold 275-350 AWHP. Seeing as he's looking for a 2.5RS, I dont think he's going to break the 350 AWHP limit of the cryo gears

/\ I always think people are going to modify and beat the hell out of their cars (no fun not to!). I would feel bad going through all the work, money, and effort to do an auto-to-manual transmission and break something.

with the cryo treated gears I don't think a 2.5RS is going to break anything

im not planning on doing any big horsepower stuff if i get an rs. i want a fun reliable awd car with some pep to it. I have had a 1.8L impreza and that was way to guttless so i would like to get something with a little more power. I am probably not going to get an auto though since it seems like more work then I want to do when I can spend a little more and get a manual.

if you want a full drag car auto FTW. after some work and about $3500 they will be stronger and way faster than any 6speed. dont get me wrong I did the non dccd 6 speed but I am not realy into drag.........yet
