Not to flame on you but shifting time is entirely driver dependent in a standard vehicle. If it's that bad get a short throw which will help a little bit.

How intrusive this lag is depends on how often you need to shift. The V-TEC engines need to be kept 'on the boil' which means frequent shifts and you can't afford to lose time between them. The WRX only revs to 6k(ish) and you don't need to shift as often.
it's not necessarily slower...you just have to ease into the clutch when you engage it. these AWD cars jerk with sloppy shifting.
i shift rather sloppily in my honda and more conservatively in my WRX. it's not slower though.

on a sidenote- i sell hondUhs now. nothing feels great like a shifter in a subaru- (in terms of imports) maybe its my perception of the direct feel of the shifter into the tranny versus a cable connection- (as in FWD vehicles)
