I just traded in my white 2001 Jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg Edition for an '04 WRX wagon in WR Blue.
I'd say the cars are nearly identical in terms of value. The VW is geared more towards 'luxary' items and the Scoob is definately more performance oriented.
The 1.8t definately produces boost sooner then the WRX. Turbo lag is almost nonexistent on the VW. However, my butt-Dyno says the 2.0 Boxer engine produces about the same wheel horse power before boost as the 1.8t in the 2300 to 3500 RMP range.
I have to admit, I already miss many of the little 'luxaries' like a power outlet in the rear, Auto rollup of the front windows (keyless rollup/down/vent with a simple mod) Much better sound system, stock 5spd is much smoother. I liked the Wolfsbug sport seats a tiny bit more then the '04 WRX seats. The VW AC is much better too.
But, when its all said and done, the all-wheel drive and the extra 47 crank horses (maybe only 30ish more at the wheels) I'm very very happy I chose to finally buy a WRX.

my parents have a jetta 1.8t. drove it around before i got my 04 wrx. the jetta was faster than i thought, a little too much turbo lag tho. then after i got the wrx, the jetta felt kind of heavy, and the wrx has more of a rush. both are good cars. the jetta has rattles and noise tho after a year. only had the wrx for 3 weeks so, still waiting.

hrm, i just went to test drive one today. and they gave me a final price of 23,600 out the door, for a bare silver, all stock no options wrx. test drove it, i just have 1 question, why in the world is the clutch SO HIGH!??! If i was stuck in traffic, my left foot would probably fall off within 30 minutes of neutral, 1st & 2nd gear shifting...geez...but other than that, i love the rex, i hope i can get it, if i do, it'll be by wednsday and what do you guys think of the price?

i dont know if this would make a diff but try adjusting the seat....and see if you can get one for 23 OTD or less...if theres another dealership nearby see if you can get them to compete against each other...if you cant then still go with the rex...it seems like a good deal but it also depends on where you live

i've sold vw's. . . *used to* i now sell subarus. . . there is a valid reason why. as nice and stylish as they may be thats pretty much it(IMO). vw is underpowered and just simply not designed to last. wrx's are made in japan(where the workers still have pride) which in general means a better product.
i'm not saying that vw is crap... just that they tend to run like like it. thats why their warranty was one of the strongest @ one time. (because they needed it) although subaru will reign in horsepower/handling i must say that the japanese can tend to be slightly "asthetically impaired".
but thats just my opinion.
edit: oops, i guess i should read more before i post- - -
go get the invoice pricing from kbb.com or edmunds.com . . .then go from there. if there are any incentives it should be listed.
