What/Who makes a good alternator?

Hi guys,

Question for car guru's over here.

What qualifies as a good alternator?

This is what I know. An alternator is what cranks the engine a few times so the car will start. Im sure its a lot more technical than that, but Im just keeping it simple.

Im just preparing ahead in the event my alternator dies. I use a 2002 wrx and Im worried it may go kaput soon.

As far as I know, there are 2 simple "brands" of alternators I can use.

1) The official subaru alternator I can purchase at a dealership or online dealer
2) The alternators available at kragen or autozone [which i consider not as good as the dealership alternator model]

Is there any recommended alternators anyone would purchase to use for there subaru? Is there a performance alternator that can be recommended? Like a "Reebok" or "Nike" of alternators?

Any info is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

- U

Well...no...the Battery is what provides the power to start your car. Once the car is running the alternator provides the power to the electrical components in the car and keeps the battery charged.

I know how you feel...my alternator is "weak" according to subaru and I've known this. Looking for input as well.

My question to add to this is:

Are other years of the WRX and STi compatible with the 02? (and 03) If so is anyone better than the 02 (or 03) alternator?
