What is the difference between an open and closed deck?

Closed deck designs have reinforcement bridges from the tops of cylinders to the blocks as well as bridges 90 degrees from those. These reinforcements prevent the cylinders from walking under extreme loads. This means that these motors can handle more boost/power more reliably. In addition to these bridges, the previous reinforcements were strengtened and more ribs were added.

All these reinforcements basically just increase resistance against flex in the block making for a larger safety margin.

This is the biggest difference between JDM EJ20s and USDM EJ20/EJ25s.
