Because they won the Best Motoring Impreza vs. Lancer challenge!
And Tsuchiya said he hates the AYC on the Evo, and that's good enough for me.
Other reasons:
-I grew up watching them slide sideways on dirt roads on TV.
-I always bought Subarus first in every Gran Turismo and Tokyo Extreme Racer Game
-They sound like angry Oni
-When I see diagrams/pictures/cutaways of engines with upward-firing cylinders, I always remark that "they drew it wrong".

they're competative in the WRC.
the boxer engine sounds sweet when its uncorked, and its a differant sound than pretty much everything else out there.
they're versatile as hell.
AWD is just too much fun.
