Shipping a car to the states.....
Hey does anyone know how much it cost to ship a car to the states from Japan? And also what and how much it cost for the modifications? I know the exhaust and integrity of the frame itself has to be modified but what else? I have a 1996 Subaru Legacy GT Touring Wagon with a Boxer stage 2 twin turbo and intercooler, with some other mods done to it and I really don't want to lose it when I come back to the states! Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Honestly i dont know of anyplace that does Federalizing of Subarus. Its alot more than just frame and chassis. Glass has to be changed, bupers to meet Us regs, alot more. To have a comparison it costs $10-15k just to get a mid 90s Nissan GT-R into the country and then you have to find someone that will insure it. Motorex does Nissans so they might know someone that does Subarus but i highly doubt it exists. Word of warning thou, if you decide to ship it to the US and take your chances. Customs will take the car, impound it, fine you and destroy the car. I know people that it happened to. They came from Japan too and tried to get it into Hawaii and Cali. But things have changes since they tried a few years ago so...
These might help you:

Have it shipped here in pieces Hoods, Fenders, Doors, Engine, Transmission Bumpers all removed from the car and put into a big crate. They would allow that, right? That would be the same as shipping ***-spec engines and trannies over, right? or am I wrong?
Would this work?

As someone who works for the agencies that you would have to pass through- here is my advice:
Don't try it. Your car as a whole will not be allowed in. Because it does not pass EPA/DOT/NHTSB regs, it can only come in as parts. The body would have to be cut in half. Even if you re-weld it, it does not have a conforming VIN, so you can't license/title it.
Sadly, unless you want to buy a RHD mail wagon and do a transplant, sell the car.

wow I met a guy who worked for volvo, he was in the military over in Japan. He told me while living there he bought a skyline and he paid 6,000 for it. His question was how could he get the car into the country. So let me ask this, could a person ship a car from Japan to lets say Mexico or Canada and drive it across? It would not be registered here in the U.S. but maybe he could show it or something. BTW motorX was going to charge him over 40,000 to handle his matter.
i can't remember the magazine, but in LA there is a mod magazine/ its like a penny saver with fixed up cars.
one guy was selling a grip of rhd subies and silvias all from japan and good to go. given they would still either have to go through motorex (so the car doesn't get destroyed) or go show only but it may be an alternative.
i wouldnt risk getting your car crushed. hard to stomach and hard to deal with the bill.
if you do... at least its not that 2001 R34 GT-R that got crushed.

When I looked into shipping a 1994 180SX back, one thing I found out was that the car could be brought back as a repatriating american. BUT could only stay for a year. This program was set in place so that persons returning from overseas could defer purchasing a vehicle immediately upon returning to the US.
I decided against it.
