Mod up my WRX Or Wait a Year for STI or Evo?
Hey Everyone,
This is my first post here on i-club but I post on clubwrx and also nasioc, but I have a question. I just got my 2005 WRX about a month ago, and so far i've done: HKS Hi-Power Catback, Perrin Up-Pipe, and an HKS Downpipe. I am gonna do some Engine Management (like an Accessport probably), but I was wondering if im better off just keeping the WRX and doing soem modding, or if I should just wait a year or so and buy an STI or an Evo? Im looking for something I can get into the 12's but maintain as a daily driver. It's not like a Drag Race all the time or beat on my car everytime I take it out, but I like going to the track a few times a year. I really like the STI's, but I really like the Evo VIII's as well.

This all depends on you. How comfortable are you with wrenching? What's your willingness to learn? What's your general tendency towards finishing projects vs. procrastination.
Fact is, you can make your WRX (or any car for that matter) into something comparable to an STi. It just depends upon how much you're willing to learn, sacrifice, and pay.
My experience is this. I put a lot of time, money, and research into modifying my WRX. It actually has an STi shortblock, stronger pistons, *** STi heads, *** STi 6 speed, larger turbo, the ability to be tuned much more aggressively than an STi, comparable brakes, comparable if not better AND adjustable suspension...and I can haul around a LOT more stuff in it around town.
However, when I started, I didn't have an image in my head of what the 'finished product' would look like. Therefore, it was (probably still is) a constant work in progress. Due to that, I've spent quite a lot more than STi MSRP minus '02 WRX wagon MSRP (~$32k - ~$21k) in order to get it to where it is now. One area where I am lazy is in selling old parts that I no longer use, so much of that hasn't been recouped.
Lastly, but very importantly, you will greatly diminish the resale of your car if you modify it in any way. If you have no issues in lowering your ethics and integrity, it's your option to 'put it back to stock' before you try to sell it, but some folks will be able to pick up on little indicators.
Bottom line, you have to ask yourself:
What is my goal for my car?
What's my propensity to get it there?
What's the potential that I won't be satisfied when I get my car to that point?
Will I be able to accept a much lower price for a modified car if I try to sell it or would I rather just go with a stock STi or EVO so that when I no longer want it, it will be much easier to sell?

Yeah I think you are exactly right. I need to just outline my modification plans and see how much it's gonna cost me and were it's going to get me. Im not worried about taking a big loss on re-sell since the car is paid off right now and I had a Cobra before this vehicle, but im going to be living in Kansas once fall starts and thats why I was so attracted to AWD. I was thinking of a 6 Speed swap into this car, but for all the money it would cost I would be just better off with the STI. Thank you for the helpful advice it is greatly appreciated.
