When Land Rover rolls out its sporty Range Stormer concept at the Detroit auto show, don¡¦t put too much stock in the vehicle¡¦s two-door configuration and racy lines as depicted in some artist renderings, including the one that Land Rover briefly flashed to the automotive press at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

While the Range Stormer is intended to show a sporty, high-performance on-road side of Land Rover without abandoning the marque¡¦s off-road strengths, the actual Range Rover Sport (which may carry the moniker Range Sport) shown in these spy shots maintains a taller stance, four doors and all the styling cues of its bigger brother, the top-of-the-line Range Rover. Due in 2005 as an ¡¦06 model, the ¡§baby¡¨ Range Rover will be built on the same platform as the new Discovery that debuts next year as an ¡¦05 model.

Range Rover Sport powerplants will likely include Jaguar¡¦s 400-hp supercharged 4.3-liter V8 and Ford¡¦s 250-hp 3.2-liter V6. The Sport will fit in the lineup between the Discovery and the Range Rover, where it will compete with the likes of BMW¡¦s X5.
