i love the EVOs, this guy in san diego where i got my blow off installed has a 630 whp EVO, i saw him run a 1/8 of a mile, he burned out while lauching and finished it in i think 7.7 seconds. it was fast. i wanted one but it cost too much so i got an 02 WRX and im happy with it.

Evo > modded WRX imo.

Factory/warranted better handling and more power.

I just got rid of my WRX for an STi. It had a TBE (and the useless bov & intake) and I could have easily spent $600 to for stg2 for 280hp. But I am much happier knowing that if anything goes wrong and I have the power stock I the dealer can warranty it. Same with handling, if anything breaks the dealer can deal with it.

I chose my STi over the Evo primarily because I got a good deal and I know the Subie is a much safer car (important since I plan to continue racing). I will give evo the credit it deserves any day that it has better handling, but there are plenty on here that feel an RSB puts the STi even on handling and the JDM springs should have been a stock option putting the STi pretty close to even with the evo. But the two are so close already, I feel if you lost a race you can't blame your car... the driver should be blaming himself.

I'd take an EVO over a WRX, no questions asked. Something about Mitsubishis block that makes them have the tendency to gain huge power with minimal mods.

As for an EVO or and STi, I'd take the STi. Faster in a straight line, but easy to mod to make go fast in the twisties.

I heard another advantage of the evo over the sti (rather inline over boxer) is that with an inline engine you have a shorter exhaust manifold which will always be an inherant advantage and becomes more exploited with more power from say, modding.

While that might be true, I will always prefer a boxer. Maybe it is one of the videos I have seen of inlines flying through hoods into the air when modded incorrectly. Not a pretty sight.

Well thats only one set back, there are plenty of positives for a boxer. Better weight distribution and designed properly it can roll away from the driver in a front end collision. There are other reasons that I can't think of at this moment. Just curious, why do you prefer boxers?

GO FOR THE STi!!
i know what you mean about when you close the doors. that sound is driving me insane.

but for a EVO. might be fast/lighter, who cares? get a STI! much nicer cars. and just mod it to suit you

You can make anything fast, but you start with 2.5 L in the STI -- it's just a better base to start with. Also, inline 4 cylinders have a higher center of gravity and it is harder to push oil UP and keep the cams oiled well vs. pushing oil out the side.

But EVO's blow up a lot -- many EVO's had failures in OTC.

WRX or STI, it is still probably more cost effective to go with a 2.5L WRX (not STI) and build it up -- you still have .5 litre on the EVO and you still got the a flat 4.

As far as exhaust, I don't see how the variance in distance will really be significant -- the header design and materials used will determine the output efficiency and this is where you fight for 2-5 HP.

Also, there is much more to a car going fast than just HP, torque is very significant, especially for those of us that don't 1/4 mi cars and prefer to road racing at your local (or not so local) track.

But I maintain, the better base to start with will be a WRX, not an EVO. Subaru have put much more R&D into their current product line than Mitsubishi.

Rob.

I would pick the WRX or an STi over an Evo anyday. I prefer having controll over the car with the body and chassis as opposed to (evo) relying so heavily on computers which are a great idea but arent always the best cause we all know sometimes they f*(_ up

That may be, but it doesn't come close to the EVO's AYC.
