Interesting article on companies using black boxes to monitor vehicles and catch speeding offenders.

so is it going to be hidden like lo-jack?
What if your doing a rally-x or auto-x. Do you get a ticket for that automatically? Or if you have some kind of emergency and have to get somewhere fast? I know that the EOD guys in the Navy have cards that will let them speed to respond to a bomb scare.

I think we should start something to get this idea stopped.

If you aren't on a road with a speed limit then you aren't speeding

Sounds like they're backing off the GPS/speeding thing. California has a law that requires a subpoena to read the info, hopefully this will be adopted at the federal level. Could make it damn hard to get out of a speeding ticket issued the old-fashioned way though.

If you dont already know, many cars already carry this type of technology. GM incorporates it in the Corvette for example. During my internship with a CSI unit near Philadelphia we used one to prove that a corvette was doing 100+ mph when it mowed down a pedestrian, that was back in 2000.

I think the concern is less about accident data than it is the GPS/Big Brother aspect. I'd like to think that I fall on the side of more privacy/less government involvement, but I see no problem with using black box crash data that's been subpoenaed in court. Its all about due process and proper procedures.

I dont like it at all. If they want people to drive safer than they need to get more cops and pay them a little better. Someone needs to realize that an actor or sports player is worth millions, but the guy that keeps us safe is maybe 50K a year. Whats up with that?

Adding cops isn't going to make the roads any safer. OTOH, if they can prove you were doing something stupid and got into an accident, then its your fault and your insurance rates go up.

Ya more *******s to give us tickets for stupid stuff!!!!

I'm all about a black box used for accident data. If a stupid idiot is speeding and hits a person I would like the black box be hard evidence that he was speeding. That way any excuses won't work.

I do agree that cops that do there job should be paid more!!!

The cops wouldn't have to do anything different than what they do now.

Taken direclty from the article:

" Probably they'll just erect an electronic debiting system of some sort that ties directly into your checking account -- since the paperwork could not keep up with the massive uptick in fines that would be generated".

it seems like they are using the "accident and safety" line to cover the fact the law enforcement knows that their officers do a ****ty job and they dont want to really do anything about it
