Any Audi people ordering STi?
Any Audi people ordering STi?
I have a 2000 A4 2.8 quattro (with upgraded suspension) which I absolutely love. But after drooling over the specs on the STi, I put a deposit on one. The only thing that keeps me from being totally in love with the STi is the exterior looks and average interior materials (EXCLUDING seats and steering wheel). But I keep re-reading the specs—the wing becomes less annoying and the drooling continues.
Or once I drive the STi, I will be sorry I ever wrote this thread.
Are there any past Audi owners who bought a current WRX or any current Audi owners considering the STi in this forum? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I have a modded 225 hp (stock rating) TT covertible. I will be getting the Sti when I can afford it. The TT isn't paid off yet. The Sti will be the best car for the money, and hopefully will outperform anything other than the Z06 which will cost a lot more. Coming from an Audi interior, I am not looking forward to the relative step down in interior quality (but step up in performance), and the STi is a little more Ricey then I would prefer, but those are minor complaints. I have spent a lot of money modding the 1.8T and it is much more expensive then any other car make. Exhaust systems that are Cat-back are often $1200. I can't wait for the STi, but I have to say that I think the quoted 4.6 0-60 time is highly understated. I think 4.8 would be lucky. I also like the fact that mods for the STi will be very easy to get and I am sure they will be offered by many different manufactures. I think with a modest $1500 investment, a reflashed ECU and uppipe or exhaust system could realistically elevate power to something around 350-375 which would be plenty.

Greetings all!
New to the forum and new to Subaru's. I recently put my order in for an STi. The plan for me is to unload my girfriends BMW 323i, giver her my Grand Cherokee to drive and I take the STi.
Being an avid enthusiast I can see the STi value per dollar. I also own a 911 which I like to track and maybe the STi will be a good compliment to this. I think the STi is a true enthusiast's car and will provide tons of trouble free miles.
My goal is to create a fun daily driver. I think the STi will deliver and then some...

Glad to see others are in a similar situation. I currently drive a 2000 328i and my wife drives a 2001 2.8 A4 Avant so I'm used to the interior quality of the German cars.
I am currently on the list for the upcoming S4 but it looks as if the price is going to start a $45K. Add some options, gas guzzler tax, state taxes, etc. and it will soon be $50K. No doubt the S4 will be a great car but the price is just too much especially when thinking about zooming it around a track. So, when I heard of the STi coming here I figured it might be a great alternative. Yes it will be step down in the interior quality but I think I can live with that. The performance will be very good and it will cost a whole lot less. The Audi will still be the "family" vehicle but the STi will allow me to have a fun car that performs very well and I can haul the family when needed too.

Yeah that is pretty much where I am. I am driving an 01 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7 and it is pretty quick for a sport ute...g-tech says 7.0 0-60 so it is pretty fun. I used to tow skis with it but recently sold them.
I want to keep a sport ute in the family and the Jeep is just as good as any other. The fiance likes the cushy luxury so I am turned loose for a "fun" hairy car!
I am a huge fan of the German metal...ours is a 2000 323i...solid, handles great love the interior/exterior etc. The poor thing can't get out of its own way though (tippy). I often have difficulty with a european performance sedan getting eaten alive by my Jeep in the straightline but...
So enter the STi. I have never even given the Subaru's a second look except on the Speed Channel and the Rally coverage...always wanted one and this is about as close as you can get from the dealer.
I took a WRX for a spin. Solid little car as well, power was good and had a lot of potential. The bling bling nature of the STi caused me to go with Silver as kinda low key. I will probably dye the seats all black and change the carpet out first thing. Praying for silver option wheels and a less towel rack like rear wing but I am getting more used to it with the more rally coverage I watch.
My Carrera is still faster and handles better but that is really for the track at this point unless the STi can unseat it from the track throne. If so I will have a ton of $$ for mods to the STi.

As with you I'm in line for a Silver STi (with silver wheels) as well. I wish you could just get the regular WRX color scheme for the interior but I think I can live with the blue seats and carpet. I love the blue exterior color, my brother has a WRX in the blue. But I'd like to tone it down a bit. I'll probably go with the big wing though (much to the complaint of my wife I'm sure) just because it is such a part of the car, I'll have to see it in person though.
I love my 328i too. It's solid, handles very well and is just a well composed car. My biggest complaint is that BMW will not give you a true differential unless you buy an M3. Their electronic system is not a solution and does not work well when driven hard. With the DSC off it's not hard to just get one wheel with the least traction spinning (especially in the rain). No fun. I live in MA and have learned to appreciate what AWD gives you in the snow, rain and even in the dry.
The Carrera is a great car, I had a ride in one at NHIS and it is amazing. I don't know if the STi will oust it except in the rain (unless you have a Carrera 4).

I currently own a lightly modified 2000 MY Audi S4 (MTM chip, springs, Milltek exhaust, UUC shortshifter) producing around 320 bhp and 375 lb/ft torque......I considered trading this in for an M3 (had one on order but cancelled) but decided 4 wheel drive was definitely more prudent for Rochester, NY winters.
When the new S4 B6 was announced I was desperately hoping that this would be a true competitor for the M3 but, in my eyes, it isn't and I could see no real reason for replacing my '00 S4.
Enter the STi........this has got to be the peformance bargain of the decade. I've read several positive postings on the AudiWorld website and also a overwhelming number of derogatory postings (rice-mobile, cheesy gold wheels, plastic interior and best of all "no prestige"). However, if you're a true performance car enthusiast, all these things pale into insignificance when you consider the real-world performance and bang-for-buck offered by the STi.
The Impreza turbo, WRX and STi models have long been lauded by the European motoring press and, as far as I can remember, one of these variants has always made it into their top 10 performance cars of the year (for many years running) often at the expense of supercars such as Porsches and Ferraris, believe it or not.
I, for one, can't wait to get my hands on the STi........it will be good company for my trusty S4.

I'm coming from an S4 with all the usual mods. The Sti seems to offer alot of great things I want in a car.
Personally i'm sick of audi dealerships and the reliability of the S4, especially mine.
The S4 is an awesome car but like anything else it has its problems. Some experience them more than others and if it wasn't for good friends i'm sure i would have gotten rid of the car along time ago.
I'm hoping the STI can offer a little more reliability, thats if i decide to get one.

Never had any kind of problems with my S4 and it's been modded since day one........it's the luck of the draw I suppose and there's no reason to believe it will be any different with the STi (or any other car for that matter).
Use 'em, but don't abuse 'em.

Well to be honest thats a rare case of having no problems with an S4. Everyone I know with the exception of one person has had the same problems I have had.
Ko3's are not reliable in any form, stock or chipped. Transmissions have bad sliders, tbb's have improper clamps on them, bpv's leak, the list goes on but i don't have time right now.
I feel like the Sti will have significantly less problems then my S4 has had, and my car was not abused.

Sorry I'm a bit off topic here, but my cousin used to work for an Audi dealer in Illinois and quit. He told me afterwards that there were all sorts of defects on those things. A4s A6s, you name it. I'm curious since there are S4 owners out there, what problems have you guys been having?

In regards to the ricey look, it's been said by a number of people that you'll have the choice of both silver and gold rims, as well as WRC-like or stock WRX-like wings. I haven't asked a dealer, as I'm not going to buy one, but I think it'd look pretty good toned down (I'd still keep the big wing, but the gold is not my style).

Samurai,
I think the most common problem is tearing of the rubber throttle-body-boot (particularly with chipped cars, but not exclusively). I know Audi also changed the BPVs, possibly for the '01 MY. People have also reported problems with the turbos, though I've not experienced that myself. The TBB and BPVs can be replaced quite cheaply with non-Audi parts (did this for peace of mind).
I think it's always a gamble when you start to mod any car, no matter how "trivial" the changes may be......especially if the car's still under warranty.

I also have come over from the Audi line with the car being an '01 A4 1.8t Avant with Apr's stage 2 and was looking at the stage 3. Then the WRX came out and waited till the '03 came out when I replaced it with the wagon version. I too missed the Audi interior and ride and the free loaner cars etc. But I love the power that the WRX makes compared to the A4. I do not miss the A4 to much and the interior of the WRX is not all that bad and lots of performance stuff out there too!
