Car Info: 02 WRX wagon=dead; rollin' in a Craptastic Camry!
A lot of folks, myself included, have had issues with the syncros on the WRX transmission. Mine randomly grinds going into first gear from a dead stop. I can make it grind every time if I rush it into gear, but for obvious reasons I don't do that. First and second have a single, collar type syncro whereas most modern boxes have dual or triple cone type syncros, which simply work better.
However, as stated above, if you drive with a good measure of mechanical sympathy, you will most likely not break any gears. I view my problem mainly as an annoyance. I don't drag launch, so I'm not terribly concerned with the rounded teeth I likely have on first gear.
