If you treat the transmission intellgiently, it can handle a very large amount of power. I've seen people running upgraded turbos on their stock tranny with many miles on it. The tranny isn't a "bad transmission", it is just the point that will go first under extreme stress.
The biggest thing to do is be hard on your clutch, not on the tranny. Slip the clutch, don't drop it. In an all-wheel-drive system, the wheels are going to get great traction. When you're dropping the clutch, all the force must go somewhere, and since the wheels don't slip easily, all of that force goes on the transmission.
Like I said, it isn't a bad transmission. I'm running Cobb Stage II at 16psi and my transmission is just as good as when I bought it. Just be aware of how the AWD system works, and you'll be fine.

It's better to burn your clutch than to break your tranny. Clutches cost WAY less to replace.

oh, and I should add. Many Subaru owners I know say that it may be difficult to get into reverse and sometimes, 1st gear, especially on cold mornings.

hAaaaaaahahAhAhAhA, i didn't notice that.
another weak point is that a lot of girls have no clue what a wrx is, so you score no points, they do however know vtec. weak!
shifting into reverse is a pain, i need a short shifter with bushings.

its so hard to shift into reverse because there is no syncro on reverse... another way to make a tranny cheaper... if it doesnt go in the first time just let out the clutch, push it back in and it should go into reverse fine. sometimes i may have to do this twice

I think the transmission is only the weak point if you beat the car.
My roomate has an '02 WRX, VF22, injectors, fuel pump, uppipe and TBE good for 230whp on an AWD Mustang Dyno (that was reading low at the time). He ran a 13.4 @ 100+ with his clutch slipping all the way through 3rd gear
25k+ miles, not a single transmission issue yet and he's run the car at the strip multiple times. He just knows how not to beat his car up.
