I think the big three are on a retro style muscle car reinstitution
Fords plan for the new mustang is (maybe was) to go retro as they did with the new thunderbird. GM also talked about making a 60’s-70’s style looking camaro but it was mentioned that it could be fwd (2005-2006). And Chrysler has a plethora of retro cars. The charger might target mustang and camaro shoppers.
I think the mustang would look good if it had a 60’s look to it but ford will mess it up somehow

I thought I heard they were going to be incresing the displacement up to 5.0 liter. Maybe not.

FRT 5.0-liter 'Cammer' crate engine
Ford Racing Technology will revolutionize the crate-engine concept when its new 5.0-liter Cammer crate engine becomes available in 2003. Instead of modifying a standard production engine to suit non-stock applications, Ford Racing specifically designed the Cammer to be one of the most technologically advanced crate engines any manufacturer has ever offered.
This high-performance retrofit is an all-aluminum, overhead-cam, 4-valve engine that is a perfect repowering upgrade for vintage Mustangs, street rods, and classic truck projects.
According to Ford Racing Technology engine engineer Andy Schwartz, “The 5.0-liter Cammer delivers a healthy 425-430 horsepower at 6700 rpm. The torque curve peaks with 370 foot-pounds at 4000 rpm.”
The 5.0-liter Cammer crate engine is based on the SVT Mustang Cobra’s 4.6-liter 4-valve V-8. However, the crate version has several unique qualities and components, including:
Larger cylinders (94mm vs. 90.2mm) for 5.0 liters of piston displacement
Flanged cylinder liners
Reinforced crankcase web areas
Forged pistons
11.0:1 compression ratio
Ported heads
Higher-lift cams (12mm vs. 10mm)
Beehive-shaped valve springs to accommodate the higher lift
Modified roller-finger followers
Multi-layer steel-insert head gaskets
Higher-flow fuel injectors
3-piece cast-magnesium variable geometry intake manifold
Higher-flow, dual-cone-spray fuel injectors
The 5.0-liter Cammer crate engine will be shipped with a stock Mustang Cobra oil pan and exhaust manifolds. Installation will be eased substantially by a choice of six different 4.6-liter 4-valve modular wiring harnesses being created specifically for the 5.0-liter Cammer crate engine.
“We intend to grow the interest in overhead-cam technology,” said Dan Davis, director, Ford Racing Technology. “This is the future for tuners, project-vehicle builders and aftermarket car and truck enthusiasts. There’s no reason why a crate engine can’t start and perform as well in an aftermarket setting as the engines in production automobiles and trucks do. The 5.0-liter Cammer crate engine will provide top performance, a slick underhood appearance and excellent driveability without the hassles attached to carburetors and distributors.”
If they use this engine, it will be a bad azz car. if they don't use it. Ford with continue to get its azz handed to it by GM's Corvette and there new GTO. Of course with 11.0 compression, there goes any idea of forced induction. I'm wondering what they are going to use in the cobra if they use this in the GT??

Phread. For your information, the Cobra has had IRS since 1999 so your statement that it's about time is irrelevant.
And for whomever said that the Mustang/Cobra was going to be turned into a luxury car because Ford was going to use a modified Lincoln LS/Jaguar S Type/Thunderbird chassis. How old are you?
My opinion on the styling argument as I posted in the other thread.

I own a Legacy Outback and it's a nice car. I visit here occasionally because I think the WRK is the primary performance import I'd consider buying but to say this Mustang concept is ugly or looks like a circumcised ***** when in all reality the WRX is an "unusual/quirky" looking 4 dr sedan is shall I say, stretching it.

I don't believe the SVT Cobra will every go luxury. The quarter mile guys will want the Cobra for 1320 feet. Many here will want the STi for curves and rallying. I like the AWD capability and usefulness of the WRX. It is hard to get away from RWD muscle cars when you frequently get to hook a five point harness up and feel 400 RWHP or more. For every day driving and weekend fun the AWD rally cars offer a lot of fun too, just like the Cobra is fun, just in slightly different ways.
