If you want the absolute best of the best, go to Masa's in San Francisco. It serves modernist French food, and the chef is world-renowned Ron Siegel (he defeated Iron Chef Sakai a few years ago on national TV in Japan
). The best food I have ever tasted, and impeccable service and atmosphere. Just be prepared to pay out your butt (at least $60 per person
